I'm an excellent driver
Today, my husband ran our car into a fence at work. He had to file an insurance claim, with a company we only just got with, and it's going to deplete the rest of our taxes. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, a tree fell on our 3-month-old family car. Today, I also learned that my husband never insured it. It's probably scrap, and we still have to pay it off for the next 5 years. FML
Today, my boyfriend wrecked our car. Now I can't get to work in order to make the money we need to buy a new one. FML
Today, I went to my insurance company to deal with some paperwork. One of their employees backed into my car before I made it into the building. FML
Today, I got hit and totaled my new car, on my way to get married, with my fiancé and kids in the car. FML
Today, at 4:30 a.m., I hit a deer on the freeway on my way to work. I've only had this car for 6 months and it's totaled. I had to wait hours for a tow. On his way to pick me up, my husband's radiator blew and his serpentine belt shredded. I also missed a day of work. FML
Today, after my car got stolen and flipped on its roof three months ago, making it an insurance write-off, and getting a new car a week ago, a drunk driver crashed into my parked car, writing it off. In both instances the drivers were thankfully OK, it's just my insurance premiums skyrocketing, no biggie. FML
Today, as I was talking to my girlfriend about how I need to find another job to be able to afford school next fall, I hit a deer causing about $3,000 in damages to my car. FML
Today, my car was damaged in an accident. At the garage, I happened to find out that if some big insurance company is paying for the repairs, they only charge half the hourly rate they charge people who have to pay from their own meager salaries. FML
Today, my fiancée wrecked my car so I had to use my other car to pick her up. Ten minutes after I did, my other car broke down in the middle of the road and I had to get it towed. My insurance covers none of these incidents. FML
Today, I woke up to find the entire driver's side of my car wrecked. Front door, back door, front and rear bumper smashed to shit. A drunk driver had hit it the previous night and ran. Don't worry though, he stopped and left his insurance information. He keyed it into the undamaged side of my car. FML

How is an insurance claim going to deplete the rest of your taxes? Isn't that the point of having insurance?

Maybe they have this thing called a deductible. Some can be really high like 1,000$

Maybe they have a deductible. Some can be awful expensive
PoisonMonkey 3
it's called a "deductible".

Liability doesn't have a deductible though, that's only for covering your own vehicle. And how much damage could he manage to do to his car with just a fence, that it would require immediate repair?

Depends on the car. In my state, if you so much as scratch a Tesla, you're looking at a surcharge on your license. There are so few body shops autho'd to work on them that the wait time is forever and expensive as hell. Gawd fuh-bid it's someone else's Tesla, because while their car is in the shop, your insurance is likely paying for their rental (driving up your claim) while the car just sits in the shop, waiting

I don't understand this. How does claiming on your car insurance affect your taxes?

For those not understanding how this will use up the rest of their tax refund, it's called a "Deductible" Those who have never dealt with a deductible are apparently still on mommy and daddies insurance. Those of us with our own insurance policies cannot always afford getting a policy with a $0 deductible. They might have a $500 or $1,000 deductible meaning they have to pay the first $500 or $1,000 of the total repair bill before the insurance pays the rest.

Yeah no I'm 41. Deductibles aren't applicable to liability.
PoisonMonkey 3
liability only covers damage caused to another's property. if they wanted or needed their car fixed, they'd have to pay the deductible. We dont know the type of fence or the amount of damage caused.

I'm not a child, I'm just not American! I didn't understand what was meant by "taxes" (since to me they are what you pay to the government and have nothing to do with insurance) but I assume from other comments it is a tax refund. Also, we don't have deductibles. We have excess, but it looks like it is the same thing.
