Alas…
Today, I saved a kitten from the streets, cleaned her up and asked the vet what I should do with her because she was the sweetest thing and my cat has a highly contagious illness. The vet had to put her down. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I took my cat to the vet. He said he felt a strange lump that could be serious. I got really upset and picked her up, crying. The vet then told me I had to put her down. Absolutely devastated by having to euthanize my cat, I passed out. He meant I had to put her back on the table. FML
Today, my cat was hit by a car. I took it to the vet expecting the worst but they told me that she’d be fine. I was so happy I didn't even mind paying the $50 bill. The next morning my cat was dead. Having her put down humanely would have cost $45, I paid $5 extra to have her die in my kitchen. FML
Today, my aunt gave my cat aspirin because when she touched his nose he had a 'fever'. I came home to a dead cat. FML
Today, I had to put my cat to sleep after she was in an accident. While I was crying hysterically, the vet asked me for $230. FML
Today, I took my wife's cat to the vet for her yearly check up. I'm finishing the day at the hospital with multiple bite wounds and a deep gash in my leg. My wife chose to comfort her cat instead. FML
Today, I had to explain to my boss that the reason I was sobbing hysterically as she told me that I was getting a pay raise was because I was going to the vet to have my sick and dying cat put down. Good news at a bad time. FML
Today, during my shift as a vet nurse, I picked up a gorgeous cat for cuddles, only to discover it was covered with pee. And now I am too. I still have 4 hours of my shift. FML
Today, I rescued a tiny kitten from the rain and brought him inside. I dried him off, gave him food, and wrapped him in a blanket. He immediately climbed onto my lap, purred for ten minutes, then sprinted upstairs and started destroying my curtains. I saved a cat. The cat saved nothing. FML
Today, I was the designated emotional support person for my friend's mom as she went to have her sick cat put down. The cat was aggressive towards the male vet. She said, "She doesn't like men" to which the vet replied, "Well, soon that won't be a problem." The willpower it took both of us to not yell at him, or worse… FML
Today, our family cat died. He had a disease (forget the name). My sister brought home a bunny, and I thought nothing of it until I tried to make the cat and the bunny friends. Sadly, it triggered his illness from stress, and he tragically passed away 4 days later. I still believe it's my fault; everyone says otherwise. FML

What.. and I cannot stress this enough.. TF?? A quick google search should have yielded a rescue or TNR group in your area who could have collected the kitten. I would have picked up kitten, turned around and walked out of ANY vet who's immediate response was euthanasia for no good reason.

if the vet only put her down because there was nothing else to do with her, then he did it because he WANTED to. if I were you I would never go back to that vet again.

Did you miss the "highly contagious illness" part?

Even without the other cat's illness, the kitten may already have been hurt beyond saving after being left in the street, which the vet might have figured out during the examination. The OP did say that she saved it from the street, not just found or picked up. It does sound strange to me that it would be due to the other cat's illness, since the other cat is presumably living with it, so I doubt that the kitten being briefly exposed to it would have warranted putting it down (and that's already somewhat doubtful since I assume OP would have made sure the kitten and her cat don't get near each other). Also, it sounds like it is OP's usual vet, who didn't put her own cat down for its disease.

Did you miss the " ANY vet who's immediate response was euthanasia for no good reason" part? Cuz OP does not say ANYTHING about the kitten having any issues that would result in needing to euthanize. I already covered that part. But thanks!

I'm sorry to hear that. I did the same thing with a puppy that turned out to have distemper and needed to be put down right away. You can get pets from shelters, but I've heard some also distribute diseased animals (hopefully unknowingly.) I hope you find a good, healthy one!

You should do whatever you possibly can to get him fired or arrested for animal cruelty

Why did the vet have to put her down? That makes no sense.
