Today, my girlfriend of 2 years broke up with me because I hadn't popped the question to her yet. For the last six months, I have been respectfully trying to convince her over protective father to give me his blessing. FML

make sure you tell her about her dad's refusal. Pour on the guilt! mwahahahaha

So when she broke up wiht you, you should have told her that. What the **** is wrong with you people, you let everybody ******* step on you and control your life. YOU DONT NEED HER FATHERS ******* BLESSING ANYWAY this is a free country and women do not need their fathers blessing, permission, or approval to do ANYTHING ESPECIALLY choose a man

Maybe you should have asked first. Also, why the **** didn't you tell her as much?

Well, since the bride's father traditionally pays for the wedding, if a man doesn't have permission, he's paying the thousands of dollars a wedding costs, and will have a pissed-off and unsupportive set of in-laws. He may not legally need permission, but the bride's father will always hold the cards over a much younger man

So youre saying if the parents arent happy with it they arent allowed to get married? Wtf? It doesnt matter what the parents think as long as OP and his girl are happy together.

Im completely agreeing with you Lacey. He shouldnt even have to ask for the fathers anything.

It's not that she wouldn't legally be able to marry, it's just that the daughter could be disowned for marrying without approval, and the husband has to pay for the wedding or more likely not have a full ceremony

Shit, I've been with my boyfriend for 3 years (we even live together) and I STILL don't think we're ready for marriage. 2 years is just way too soon.

Wow! She ended the relationship because you didn't ask her to marry you within her time frame, which is a tad on the short side! She sounds like a brat! And will always be bratty anytime she doesn't get her way. Sounds like a real winner there!

She may have had some inner issues, that she felt if she didnt get married now she never would, or maybe she just felt OP in particular was never going to pop the question. Just my thoughts.

Yeah, if it was bothering her so much, she should have talked to him about it. Am i the only bitch who tries to communicate?

LOL! "Am I the only bitch who tries to communicate?" Sorry, this amused me to noooo end.

The way to be "respectful", no 9, is to realize that a woman can make her own decisions and doesn't need Daddy to do it for her.

It's not daddy making the decision, it's just him giving his blessing. She makes the decision. There have been several times where daddy said "oh okay" but she said "no way" or "not now." It is ultimately her decision, he's just giving a thumbs up.

Yeah... Definitely great that you're asking for her dad's blessing, but SIX friggin months just for that?

Don't you mean "engaged"? Because it'd be pretty shitty of them to go get married without even inviting her parents to the wedding lol

Yes, but he doesnt need to give a thumbs up at all. Thats the problem. No one needs to give a thumbs up.

I mean the future wife does... you can't just slip a ring on her finger while she's sleeping and drag her up the aile. But yeah no one else's opinion matters
