Man or woman?

Today, while working the dinner rush at my job, every single computer, credit card machine, and printer froze for an hour and a half. The reason behind this issue was a large wire ripped from the mainframe, the same wire I tripped over 20 seconds before while my boss watched. FML

Clearly the wire posed a safety hazard. You should sue your boss.

No worries... I actually did that once too. No joke.

Safety hazard, should contact the Labour Board

Why is it out in the open where people can trip on it? Especially at a restaurant, because there is so much traffic! That is not your fault at all!

#5 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:06pm by Inspired22

(0)

Tripping is really easy in a busy place like a restaurant, especially when stuff always ends up all over the floor. Don't sweat it and I hope you didn't take shit from anybody.

At my old job I would frequently slip on ice cubes dropped onto the floor that were nearly impossible to see with the lighting, but luckily I'd never had that happen while carrying something.

(0)

you literally did deserve that one, sorry bud.
i mean you caused the computers to crash an shit, i dont believe that could be anyone elses fault.
but i understand, that shit sucks. i cashiered once when the comps froze (someone elses fault) and had to bust out one of those credit card machines that stamps the card from the 80s
shits weak

They shouldn't been keeping such important wires out there for people to trip on...especially in a restaurant, where people are rushing around carrying food and breakable things. Otherwise I'd be like you...the (first) one who trips over it and messes everything up. I really don't think this is your fault.

#8 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:15pm by PureGold

(0)

If the wire is that important, it definitely shouldn't be anywhere that it can be tripped over. Bad planning on their part, imo.

(0)

i'm sorry... mainframe?

#10 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:18pm by kelther

(0)

being the clumsy person i am, i can definitely feel your pain.
i don't think it's your fault though, i agree with #8, leaving a wire out where someone could trip is a safety hazard, your boss should have had that taken care of.

#11 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:20pm by rekc777

(0)

WTF is a restaurant doing with a mainframe? Those things are expensive (~$100k for an entry-level)

#12 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:23pm by UrLifeDoesntSuck

(0)

seconded... if that wire was crucial enough that tripping over it could bring every system in the restaurant down, your manager and/or owner is a complete moron for leaving it in the open...

#13 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:26pm by andyman1080

(0)

A single point of failure left out where it could be tripped over? Someone wasn't paying attention to Mr. Murphey

#14 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:29pm by Werrf

(0)

I guarantee your restaurant doesn't have a mainframe.

#15 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:32pm by gr33k

(0)

by "mainframe" OP probably means "Windows 98 tower running some POS/credit card/print server, under the tomato sauce shelf"

#16 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:37pm by garrettux

(0)

We had the same problem at McDonalds then, and since you can't even work without the computers there... well lots of angry customers.

Your restaurant doesn't have a mainframe.

#18 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:39pm by hardcore

(0)

That's shitty! Hopefully your didn't get hurt, but totally not your fault! Don't let your boss blame this on you, it was a accident because of poor planning! (now im not suggesting you sue, unless you are actually really hurt... it ticks me off when people sue over everything... it just wouldnt fly even 50 years ago.)

Also, as other's have said, i doubt there's a "mainframe" in your restaurant, it's usually thrown out there in movies to sound technological....

Hope you're ok!

(0)

that's very embarrassing :P

#20 - On 04/06/2009 at 2:53pm by who_rollerpig

(0)

not your fault
there meant to have the wires somewhere that no one can trip

#21 - On 04/06/2009 at 3:04pm by pumpkincakes

(0)

If I tripped over a wire the first thing I would do after I got up would be to check what I tripped over. While it's their fault for having a wire out where people could trip over it, it's your fault for not checking the wire after you tripped on it.

#22 - On 04/06/2009 at 3:06pm by imgangstayo420

(0)

That was a trip hazard which is an OSHA violation. You didn't do anything wrong. Your boss is lucky you didn't get hurt because you could have sued the crap out of them.

For all of those giving the OP a hard time about using the term "mainframe"...give it a rest. A mainframe is a continually evolving general purpose computing platform incorporating in it architectural definition the essential functionality required by its target applications.

So #16 a "Windows 98 tower running some POS/credit card/print server, under the tomato sauce shelf" could, although a bit of a stretch, be considered a mainframe in it's most basic sense. The OP could have used a far more stupid term...believe me, I have heard them all!

#26 - On 04/06/2009 at 6:16pm by badopie9er

(0)

#26 - no way. the mainframe status is negated by proximity to tomato sauce.

All restaurants have mainframes.. I mean seriously, who doesn't have a DASD or two back in the office set up with their z10? I've heard you can't sell food without it..

#29 - On 04/06/2009 at 6:23pm by Dustwel

(0)

oooooh, that sucks. I once accidentally turned off the main drive thru computer where I work, so we were stuck without one of the computers for about half an hour. I felt really bad, haha. Oh, my noob days ..

#30 - On 04/06/2009 at 6:24pm by citruslatte

(0)

so by your mark any computer could be considered a mainframe? that doesn't... sound right.

#31 - On 04/06/2009 at 6:24pm by kelther

(0)

Safety hazard indeed. If it's not taped down or clearly marked as a tripping hazard it's the management's fault.

Working in IT (well, sort of...), I can say that whoever installed that system should have their nuts handed to them... Like someone else said; a "wire" that can cause a single-point failure with no backup, and it's "sitting out on the floor"? STUPID install...

And yeah.. I've been there... (sorta). I was pulling out old redundant coaxial cable from an old "Cat-2" network.. and accidentally cut the brand new fiber optic cable that fed the whole building. Ooops. Guess I should have specified a DIFFERENT wire color from the old wire, huh? One grey wire looks like the next when you're in a dimly lit attic.

I love 80s and 90s action movies that require some single dorky savant esque character to break into government documents at some time.

*fervent typing*
Protagonist's love interest: What's going on!?
Dorky "hacker": I'm hacking into the mainframe. I've got 20 seconds to get the password before it shuts down on me.
Protagonist: WE HAVEN'T GOT MUCH TIME!

and so forth. Point being, I'm with the people on the misuse of "mainframe." Not so much because I want to be technologically accurate, but because it sounds hella lame. Either way...sucks that no one knew how to plug anything in for almost 2 hours.

(0)

I've done things like that too, except the it was a little more high-profile then the credit machines in a store... I ended up taking down a chunk of our network infrastructure, and since I was the IT guy I had to fix it. Take that, me!

#42 - On 04/07/2009 at 9:12am by DankJemo

(0)

Yep, safety hazard. If anyone gives you shit, tell them it wouldn't have happened if they'd conform to safety codes.

Seriously, tell your boss to tape that shit down if he doesn't want another employee or even a customer getting injured and seeking legal action.

#43 - On 04/07/2009 at 9:42am by seamripper

Shit dude, I did something very similar at work the other week. I threw a pile of rubbish into our binstore, which is right underneath our projector (I work in a sports bar). the rubbish landed on a wire and killed the picture, right at the most intense part of the Scotland v Ireland Six Nations match. FML, I guess :P

#44 - On 04/07/2009 at 9:45am by radge

(0)

I created an account to specifically tell you that you are an idiot because 1) watch where you're going 2) its not a mainframe there no way a restraunt has a mainframe, the word youre looking for is computer (i mean comeon) 3) its not a cord its an ethernet cable what century do you live in?

#45 - On 04/07/2009 at 12:24pm by smjtf2

(0)

At least you've never burned a hole in your finger with degreaser and been forced to file a safety hazard report with OSHA because of it -_-

#46 - On 04/07/2009 at 9:37pm by podrummer9209

(0)

A wire that important shouldn't be accessible for you to trip over ! Your boss is retarded, should've checked!

#47 - On 04/08/2009 at 1:04am by AmyCM

(0)

I'm not sure, but chances are that that exposed wire violates some kind of legal code.

haha this is totally something I would do!!!
BRAVO

#49 - On 04/13/2009 at 5:31am by 4581

(0)

Oh for God's sake! Who cares what the OP called the computer system. #45, sorry you wasted your time.

At any rate, sorry about the system going down, I'm not a fan of the "Sue-Happy" attitude, but that sort of thing could constitute a work hazard, so don't feel too down on yourself.

#50 - On 04/17/2009 at 4:40pm by pat_mac

(0)

That's messed up. The company shouldn't have had the wires laying around. No matter what the company should be able to put the wires in a better area.

#51 - On 05/07/2009 at 3:53am by 24788

(0)

And this is why important wires should be taped to the floor.

YOU BITCH! That happened at a resturaunt I was eating at! I'm a diabetic so I need food and you fucked me up! FUCK YOU!!!

#53 - On 06/15/2009 at 7:26pm by rocker8877

(0)

its not like they planned to 'fuck you up'. it was an ACCIDENT. get it through your head. fyl to OP

#54 - On 11/28/2009 at 7:55pm by raaaaaaachael

(0)

Yeah, it's not like she decided to trip over the cord just to screw with you. And if you're diabetic you really should bring food with you in case these kind of things happen, because they do, this is the real world now.
