Man or woman?

Today, at work I wrote up my boyfriend (whom I've been secretly dating, because I'm his supervisor) for being $40 short on his register. Our policy is to write up anyone short over $10. He got mad and told my boss we're dating, and I was instantly fired. Then I got dumped for being a "tattle-tale". FML

I agree, your life sucks (14680) - you totally deserved it (9066)

OP: Now do you know why they shun upon workspace relationships? I hope you learn from this experience...though you should've known already.

#69 - On 11/06/2009 at 11:41am by Reyo

YTDI. I would have fired you both actually. Dating is not Just the reason rather it's passing on/accepting illegal favours to/from someone you are in relationship with.

YDI

#2 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:22am by w00tzer

YDI for not denying the relationship. If your boyfriend is an asshole like that, it's okay to deny it, I guess.

#24 - On 11/06/2009 at 4:14am by hoschiadedodi

YDI for dating an immature asshole

#3 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:23am by leero

you did the right thing, don't worry about that jerk you will find someone better!

#4 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:25am by Passionangel

She should have also reported herself for violating what seems to be a rule.

OP: YD the firing
But FYL for getting dumped over this.

Was he fired also?

#13 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:53am by dudeitsdanny

How would she deserve being fired? Those rules about dating coworkers are incredibly immoral and essentially a joke that only a few people act on because they have to.

#31 - On 11/06/2009 at 5:53am by MagicMeds

how did she do the right thing?
i mean she didnt mention he pocketed it, so it was most likely a simple error. just clearing it up behind the counter would have been the appropriate way to handle it. but i guess she decided his indiscretions unacceptable when it doesnt involve her. the point is, shes a hypocrite, and whether the rule is stupid or not, she has to follow it. personally i think its a stupid rule to write people up for one single error in the till, but i think id still accept it as a rule.

#46 - On 11/06/2009 at 8:47am by organisedchaos

Him calling her a tattle tale was kinda a big hint that he stole it... If it was an error why would he call her that? No, he obviously stole it figuring his girl had his back. She was just trying to do her job, he was just mad he was caught

#57 - On 11/06/2009 at 10:20am by Sun_Kissed18

I worked at a movie theater, and if we were more than $25 short on our register, it was an automatic write up. I was a supervisor, but friends with some of the employees (I had worked with them, and was then promoted) and it was difficult at times, but I never had them pull anything like that. He sounds like an asshole, and you can do better.

#63 - On 11/06/2009 at 10:58am by tiger411

a single error? 40 dollars is not a single error, he gave away money to a customer that didn't deserve it. The company I work at writes you up for being 5 dollars over or under on the till. It takes A LOT of mistakes (or stealing) to get to be 40 dollars off. Most people barely go over 5 cents off.

#83 - On 11/06/2009 at 7:07pm by shanster

@57...no...it isnt at all. if he lost it or accidentally fucked up then its quite possible

@83 that depends entirely on what youre selling and they money youre handling.
when selling phones i once had several prepaid credit recharges being processed at once with several phones and 3 different customers because everyone was out to lunch, i accidentally marked down a 50 as a 20 and the till was short 30 at the end of the day. i was written up for it, having juggled too many customers at once, meanwhile if one of them was a mystery shopper id have lost my bonus for the month. its called human error, you might wanna look into it since apparently youre above the rest of us.
"he gave away money to a customer that didn't deserve it"...LOL oh no, someone got something they didnt deserve. thats so unusual...especially in capitalist society!

#93 - On 11/07/2009 at 8:03am by organisedchaos

He is obviously to immature to understand the importance of having the correct amount of money in the till and the fact you have to do your job and properly to. You will find someone with the same mentality no doubt and will be better off without the other guy.

#5 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:26am by nzkristy

Too many negative votes, comment buried. Show the comment.

You should have quietly added the 40 bucks out of your own pocket to keep the honey flowing.

If I'm dicking my female boss, I'd expect her to cover up my failings, not rat me out.

Now, I'll bet he wants nothing to do with an unemployed hosebag. Am I right or am I right or am I right?

#6 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:30am by perdix

You're left.

#7 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:31am by shaister

No way! You should've taken more money out and mentioned to your boss he was stealing out of the till. If you'd done that you'd be rid of him, still have a job, and have some extra spending money.

#28 - On 11/06/2009 at 5:23am by Rayn4u

You probably suck in bed. It happens to people in Washington.

#8 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:35am by kariface

It's tattle-TALE.

And why are you picking on short people?

#9 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:38am by perdix

It originally said "tattle-tail" but the grammar police quietly fixed it and made me look stupid.

#11 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:41am by perdix

I'm sorry. :-)

#12 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:43am by Vanni (FML Staff)

Ahahahaha - it's YOUR bad ;-)

#29 - On 11/06/2009 at 5:29am by Didi (FML Staff)

Maybe you guys could put a notation that a post was edited so everyone can be right.

I normally don't point out errors like this, but the difference between "tattle-tail" and "tattle-tale" is way beyond a mere typo, it's a conceptual FAIL.

I'm just trying to prevent those fights where someone sees the original version, points out the error and then someone who sees the corrected version writes, "It clearly says. . ."

Love the work your doing. Keep it up.

#50 - On 11/06/2009 at 9:03am by perdix

Well, if the grammar police were here, then they should of spelled it right.
Tattletale. No hyphen.Tattle-tale is not a word.

#70 - On 11/06/2009 at 11:47am by Vonuc

If the grammar police were really here, and not just some pretenders, then they would know that "should of" makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It should be "should have." Seriously, how the hell do you even think of "should of"?

#73 - On 11/06/2009 at 12:55pm by cefarix

Well, dude, I'm not the grammar police. That's obvious. You should of known that.

#77 - On 11/06/2009 at 4:10pm by Vonuc

What does "should of" mean?

#81 - On 11/06/2009 at 6:05pm by cefarix

amen - I knew someone should HAVE pointed that out

#87 - On 11/06/2009 at 8:36pm by weinerdog

The dude's a prick, and you should be glad you're rid of him, if short a job. Nobody mature over the age of 10 uses the term "tattle-tail". I've seen even 11 year olds make the switch to "snitch". Plus there probably wasn't too much to your relationship to break it off like that.

You should do what my sister does and get one of your female friends to go in and claim he harassed her.

#10 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:40am by alterationartist

Wait a minute....how come YOU got fired...but he didn't?

#14 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:53am by Luckster

...because she was management and he wasn't. He could sue for sexual harassment over being fired now. As management, she should have known better and exercised proper judgement, and protected her company from potential liability. They were right to can her. But the guy is still a douchebag, and I'm sure they'll find a way to get rid of him soon. They have to do it in a way that doesn't look retalliatory or anything.

#23 - On 11/06/2009 at 3:57am by Mr_Eated

Dudes like this raise the red flag for being an immature bag of shit the moment any conflict between you arises, and this couldn't have been the first one. Should've dumped him then.

If you have any possessions at his place, or any naughty photos, the spiteful acts aren't over yet.

#15 - On 11/06/2009 at 2:59am by Nakedsquirrel

He's a baby with a capital B. He should've also gotten fired.. not just you. But I don't think you should've been fired.. but some companies have a strict policy on supervisors dating employees.

#16 - On 11/06/2009 at 3:01am by saragrl90

Don't date people at work. Lesson learned. Move on, he's a douche.

#17 - On 11/06/2009 at 3:05am by d0u6la5b

You totally desrved it. He's an asswipe for "losing" the money and expecting you to cover it up, but you deserved it for obviously infringing company policy.

That's why you don't date your juniors if you're a supervisor, especially when money auditing is involved.

You're better off without him.

#18 - On 11/06/2009 at 3:07am by cartoonelvis

thats wat u get for snitching no one likes a tattle tail

#22 - On 11/06/2009 at 3:50am by anjyu22

1, you broke the rules! Did you honestly think you'd get away with it forever?
2, if the shyte is prepared to risk your job by sleeping with you stealing $40 is nothing!

You should pick your men more carefully, he wasn't worth the time nor your job.

#25 - On 11/06/2009 at 4:41am by Tez_Mum

I dunno.

He could have been an awesome lover and done things to her nobody else could.

Being a mid-level manager in a retail setting is not exactly the stuff dreams are made of. Getting your brains fucked out is! ;)

#59 - On 11/06/2009 at 10:47am by perdix

Methinks he hath shorted the till.

#26 - On 11/06/2009 at 4:47am by Major_General

The till being short doesn't necessarily mean you'll get fired. Just a bollocking and perhaps an official warning (unless of course it's your third strike or something).

The guy's a jerk for getting you fired, and then for dumping you. I agree with the others, his behaviour makes it sound like he's skimming the till.

#27 - On 11/06/2009 at 5:01am by Paper_Tiger

#32 - On 11/06/2009 at 6:09am by AntiChrist7

If they fired you instantly without even questioning whether or not he was making up your relationship, you can do something about it. Taking the word of an employee without looking into it further isn't grounds for termination.

#33 - On 11/06/2009 at 6:09am by arissia

It was "company policy" not to date him. As if you only follow the policies you want. That being said, why didn't you tell them he was lying?

CartoonElvis. Nobody cares, shut the fuck up.

rayn4u. She has no proof you dumbass, you think you could just go around telling people that someones been stealing and they would instantly believe it? If they did there's so many people i wouldn't need to worry about.

Today I got fired for breaking the rules.
Today my bf dumped me for ratting him out.

OP doesn't know how to keep a job or a bf. I see lots of cats in her future, and in her end.

#47 - On 11/06/2009 at 8:59am by kukopia

Don't shit where you eat.

#41 - On 11/06/2009 at 7:59am by kernelkat

YDI for not informing whoever is your boss that you two were dating. Most places I've worked move people who are dating away from each other so shit like this doesn't happen. Especially if one of you if a supervisor of some sort and the other is just a cashier. Your ex could sue the company for sexual harassment because the write up came from someone he was dating.

And although YLIF because he broke up with you after, I wouldn't want to be with him after he ratted you out anyways =\ So it's probably better that you find a new job and move on.

You did do the right thing by writing him up, but try to follow all policies, or in this case, date someone you can trust to keep their mouth shut when you're only doing what you had to do.

#43 - On 11/06/2009 at 8:10am by Zion0153

"wahh I got fired for not following company policies". Grow the fuck up.

#44 - On 11/06/2009 at 8:35am by Tippssy

Maybe he was stealing the money to buy you something?

#45 - On 11/06/2009 at 8:43am by RedBaron

So let's see, you purposely snuck around breaking the rules set by your company, rules which you were clearly aware of, and expected not to be punished? You deserve to be punished, though I'll agree that your ex is a douchebag since he thought dating you meant he wouldn't get into trouble when he messed up his till. He was clearly a terribly boyfriend anyways, and it sucks you had to lose your job over some idiot like him.

#48 - On 11/06/2009 at 9:01am by highwind886

They have that policy for a reason just proven here. Hope he got fired too...

I'm curious, why in some workplaces are you fired for dating co-workers? That's ridiculous.

#60 - On 11/06/2009 at 10:48am by HappyCatIsHappy

because of all the bullshit drama it causes when they break up (and because some employees don't have the decency not to fuck in the office).

He must have been a good fuck... why else would you get involved with someone beneath you? The guy sounds like a genuine idiot and he obviously didn't have any money (except for the few bits he was stealing from the till.)

If you just need a horny guy, check out the local high school. They'll take care of your needs and they'll probably have more maturity than your boyfriend also.

#88 - On 11/06/2009 at 8:36pm by FerrariCake

Oh, you broke the rules for your work...

but you wanted to write up your boyfriend for breaking the rules at work?

YDI!!!!

If you are dating at work, that in ITSELF is bad.

If you are dating at work and you write somebody UNRELATED to you up, thats EXTRA bad.

But when you are dating at work and you write up your boyfriend, the guy you like so much that you are willing to break the rules for... you are just a stupid, dumb, hypocritical, heartless bitch. That's the worst of them all. It doesnt even make sense! I hope you stay jobless fuck-o!!!

#89 - On 11/06/2009 at 9:04pm by wrwrestler

You definitely deserved it if you're dating someone at work, especially if it's someone who works directly under you. Those rules were established for good reasons, and situations like this only further back up why those policies indeed should stay and be enforced.

#90 - On 11/07/2009 at 2:42am by israelnotjacob

Aside from the drama that surrounds the break-up itself, the primary reason against dating someone you work with (from a personal perspective, not a corporate one) is that after the relationship ends, you're still going to see that person at work, all the time. If you part as friends, it may - MAY - be fine; if it's not a pleasant break-up, having to see them at work the next day, and every day until one of you moves / gets fired / gets a new job will not lead to a pleasant working environment.

Companies have rules against relationships - almost always this simply limits relationships between supervisor and subordinate, and these rules make sense. If you're a supervisor and dating a subordinate, that subordinate may well expect preferential treatment (whether not being written up for an infraction, or a better schedule, or whatever) and your other subordinates will suspect your partner is recieving preferential treatment whether they are or not.

You broke rules set in your company policy, you got caught.
You were in a relationship with someone who was either too dumb to keep their register correct or was stealing from their place of work, expecting you to collaborate in their theft, and took vengance on you when you refused.

For your sake, I hope it was the latter, because one can conceal a moral fibre with which that is normal behaviour - the dumb thing you should have been able to see ahead of time.

You Deserve It: You were fired for breaking a rule that you did indeed break
Your Life is Looking Up: You reached the end of a relationship with either an idiot or a burgeoning criminal

Final Veridict, YDI+silver lining

#92 - On 11/07/2009 at 6:04am by Ejigantor

#95 - On 11/08/2009 at 10:15am by shouraku

That's what she said... oh wait. It's already a sexual innuendo, damn it.

Anyway, here's my take on the situation. She liked him. He didn't really like her. He just wanted to date his supervisor so he could steal from the register and not get ratted out. When he found out that she wouldn't let that crap fly; he got pissed and decided to get revenge.

That's what I think was going on.
