Man or woman?

Today, an injured guest stopped at the front desk of the hotel and raved about my kindness and 'commitment to customer service'. He told my boss about how I'd gone to the ice machine and personally delivered a bag of ice for his injured knee. Guess who got written up for leaving the front desk? FML

I agree, your life sucks (26400) - you totally deserved it (948)

People still live in Michigan? Well, last one out, turn off the lights.

#2 - On 09/24/2009 at 3:34am by Intoxicunt

Don't worry, I heard the Michiganians are becoming extinct.
The cause seems to be leaving their desks at work, therefore their boss eats them, or "writes them up", as they say.

#33 - On 09/24/2009 at 2:06pm by SusanaSaysRawrxD

Lol. You're really funny. You should comment more! MOAR!!!1!

Soon, the one guy left in MI will be a fat boss.

#34 - On 09/24/2009 at 2:28pm by Intoxicunt

For you, Toxi, I shall comment more!
Too bad for that fat boss that's left standing. He'll have to resort to living off the ice in the ice machine!
Oh...wait..

#35 - On 09/24/2009 at 2:36pm by SusanaSaysRawrxD

The injured guest got written up?? But he doesn't even work there!

Ouuuuchhhh. Seriously.
Life is full of surprises.

#4 - On 09/24/2009 at 3:54am by NeverLetHerGo

AN injured person ... it's not hard.

#5 - On 09/24/2009 at 4:05am by lizzzie

Yes. To clear it up for those of you that don't know the rule (like the poster):

"a" and "an" are used depending on the first letter of the next word. It has nothing to do with singular (one) and plural (many) tense.

The rule is to use "an" if the next word has a vowel at the beginning such as "injured." It has nothing to do with singular and plural tenses. Therefore, it would be "an injured guest", "an ice cream cone", "an original idea", etc. whereas "a" would be used for words that start with a consonant like "a party", "a tree", etc.

#56 - On 09/26/2009 at 3:59am by fantasyflamz

Things like this support all reasons not to give a crap about anyone else. You do something so simple and kind, and you pay for it. I can just see what would happen if someone fell in front of the desk, "I'm sorry ma'am I can't leave my desk, but I can call 911. They will be with you in a few moments".

#6 - On 09/24/2009 at 4:24am by Joecrook

You could have gotten someone else to get the ice to him.

#8 - On 09/24/2009 at 4:35am by RubixMonkey

This kind of nonsense is what turns good employees into jobsworths.

#9 - On 09/24/2009 at 4:42am by Ray_of_midnight

In these cases, I would have told management that it would have looked horrible as the face of the hotel, not to help it's attendants. In my years of costumer service, people always come first is what I've been taught. You did a good thing, no matter what anyone says.

#10 - On 09/24/2009 at 4:59am by JessiGoose

your boss is an ass

#14 - On 09/24/2009 at 6:27am by padlarf

No, he's not. You can't leave the front desk or you won't be able to serve the next person to come in. Learn to delegate, OP.

The YDI is for saying "a injured."

#18 - On 09/24/2009 at 8:14am by BeeSkwaird

Ok, let's see what happens next time an person with a twisted ankle, broken arm, etc. comes in asking for help, and the OP "can't leave his desk." He'll probably get written up for that, too. Either way, the boss is an ass, like #14 said.

And another thing, "a injured" could just be a typo, not bad grammar. Everyone saying YDI for bad grammar has way too much time on their hands.

what is an OP it's been bothering me and i'm new

i work at a hotel in aspen, and the fact is that they should have more than 1 person at the front desk, we have to leave all the time to bring people towels, fans, space heaters...just like most hotels...what kinda crap hotel do you work at?

These work stories are getting less and less unoriginal. I still say FYL, though.

#16 - On 09/24/2009 at 7:34am by quoteXunquote

You get someone to cover for you, or you get someone else to get the ice.

#17 - On 09/24/2009 at 8:00am by 01100110

Next time someone needs something that requires you to leave the desk, you'd better pull out your mule face. Ring the boss up and ask for his/her assistance with a customer. Since you can't leave your desk. Do this sort of thing until the lazy ass discovers some clause that makes allowances.

Seriously. Plant that ass at the desk and leave for neither man or beast. [:

#19 - On 09/24/2009 at 8:43am by mercyFML

That's actually a really good plan. Call your boss for EVERYTHING. Don't even get up to get the paperclips or sticky-notes on the other side of the desk. Plant your ass there and make your asshole boss get EVERYTHING for you.

see the opposite happenned to me...at my college i was in a bike accident and sliced my leg not only did i have to walk half a mile to my dorm hall but then the person at the front desk refused to help me and leave the desk because he did not want to get into trouble so i ended up leaving bloody footprints everywhere and getting stitches... he got in trouble for not even calling anyone

#29 - On 09/24/2009 at 12:54pm by blastvortex

Seriously FYL. If company policy says you can't leave the front desk though, YDI even if you were being extra nice. It sucks, but rules are rules, you can't just break them when you see fit to unless you're in charge.

#30 - On 09/24/2009 at 1:15pm by TheTruth1428

For the record I work Night Audit, it was 5:50am. The poor man requested a 6:45am wake up call so he could attend his conference. There was no one else available to help the guest. During training two months ago I'd been told 'Customer Service' was 'everything'.

YDI for having worse grammar than my 4 year old cousin.

#36 - On 09/24/2009 at 3:02pm by _THE_MASTER_

You have worse grammar than the OP does because you cant even spell the simple word "You deserve it" or "four" . :| and to the OP you dont have bad grammar its just this lil fag that cant even read things right and is probably in first fucking grade.

#38 - On 09/24/2009 at 4:28pm by bobleheadNS

Actually, you are the fucking idiot. Theres is a grammar error. What the hell are you in? Kindergarten?

#39 - On 09/24/2009 at 4:44pm by scateice

"Theres is"? FAIL.

#40 - On 09/24/2009 at 6:02pm by rightsaidred

#38, shut up right now, you stupid hypocrite.
1. You can't say people have bad grammar because they use an abbreviation commonly used on this website and use a number correctly. Those don't impact one's grammar, dummy.
2. You say "cant", "dont", and "lil". Guess what! Those are NOT correct! Dummy.
3. Learn how to read.

#65 - On 10/29/2009 at 8:40pm by TheLetterZero

I know that it has been stated many times already, but just putting in my two cents. The OP does in fact have bad grammar. And if you were not "in first fucking grade," then you would have noticed that.

#67 - On 11/03/2009 at 11:34pm by arasara

God I hate it when stuff like that happens

#37 - On 09/24/2009 at 3:32pm by leksileks

your boss is an asshole. i'm in hospitality and know customer service is most important...however....you shouldn't leave the front desk unattended....you probably should have had someone cover for you or had someone else go get ice

#43 - On 09/24/2009 at 8:41pm by krs1234

For the record I work Night Audit, it was 5:50am. The poor man requested a 6:45am wake up call so he could attend his conference. There was no one else available to help the guest. During training two months ago I'd been told 'Customer Service' was 'everything'. Strangely I thought I was doing the right thing. Especially considering one of my official duties is to leave the desk to deliver folio's (bill's) to be placed under the doors of departing guests. As for the 'grammar police' I said 'a injured guest' rather than 'an injured guest' to indicate an individual person, rather than imply I had multiple injured people staying at the hotel were I work.

#46 - On 09/24/2009 at 9:24pm by dragonlady1406

Sorry, but "an injured guest" is correct grammar and is singular referring to one person. Helping "injured guests" would be referring to multiples.

#55 - On 09/26/2009 at 3:53am by fantasyflamz

Correct, there is no reason "an" would make such an implication. That's a grammar fail on your part, OP.
Also, "where I work", not "were I work". :P

#62 - On 10/22/2009 at 2:49pm by TheLetterZero

Wow, where are you in MI? All the hotels I've seen are near empty so leaving the front desk wouldn't be a big deal.

#44 - On 09/24/2009 at 9:05pm by monkey314159

lol, monkey pie...

#58 - On 09/27/2009 at 7:54pm by Maddoctor

I'm just reiterating the fact that it's AN injured person, not A injured person.

People who can't speak English properly really shouldn't be able to submit or moderate FMLs... because then those of us who can get thoroughly annoyed when we have to stop reading about lives to sympathize for and start having to ask the public school systems to apologize to the population they've blatantly failed so miserably.

#47 - On 09/24/2009 at 11:32pm by dreamofme

You are pathetic, if you have such an issue with grammar why not go teach it to people who asked you to?

#52 - On 09/25/2009 at 1:19am by anything_els

good for you, honestly.

#48 - On 09/24/2009 at 11:39pm by gigi2009

Hahahaha... you would live in Michigan. And by that I mean I live in Michigan, and understand the kind of people who live in Michigan. FYL for living in Michigan... God I hate it here....

#49 - On 09/24/2009 at 11:48pm by itsalwaysfunny

No good deed goes unpunished. Quit now!

#54 - On 09/25/2009 at 12:19pm by jonny2x4

YDI. You should NEVER abandon the desk. That's how shit gets stolen.

#57 - On 09/27/2009 at 1:22am by prichardson

you people have obviously never worked in hospitality...most of the time hotel employees (at resorts at least) live on property, in employee housing...if i piss off my boss and get fired, i lose my apt...

#60 - On 10/05/2009 at 4:47pm by Godless50

That's a bunch of bull! You didn't deserve that!

#61 - On 10/11/2009 at 11:26am by BurningAwakening

"A" and "an" both mean that there is one. An is the one you use when the word after it begins with a vowel. So your whole "I used a to indicate that there was only one rather than more" thing is bs. Other than that, it sucks because if part of your job requires leaving your desk then why do they care about this time?

#63 - On 10/24/2009 at 7:52pm by 420bliss

Haha wow, the OP's comment just made me lose faith in humanity.

#64 - On 10/27/2009 at 12:12am by drinkupgorgeous

"I said 'a injured guest' rather than 'an injured guest' to indicate an individual person, rather than imply I had multiple injured people staying at the hotel were I work."... That doesn't make any sense... It's still just as incorrect.

Either way, you did the right thing and your boss or whoever it was, seems like an idiot.

#66 - On 10/31/2009 at 7:00pm by SigneRobertson

AGREED! You totally shouldn't be fired for the customer service part, but WTF? I wouldn't even harp on the "A injured" thing, but the fact that you think the difference between the proper use of "a" and "an" has anything to do with the number of injured... wow - that just blows my mind.

confused? read this: http://www.compassrose.com/grammar/a-vs-an.html

I've thrown this out there before: YDIG: You Deserve It - Grammar. Hit for grammar fail.

#68 - On 11/04/2009 at 1:03am by mock09

.

i work as a hotel receptionist (actually i'm working right now). we have a sign that we put out when we have to leave that says "the front desk clerk will be back shortly". because, come on, you have to leave SOMETIMES.

you guys don't have anything like that?

.

#69 - On 11/18/2009 at 10:06pm by JohnnyOnTheSpot

Of course it was the OP that got written up. Have some common sense. Anyways, even though you got written up, you still should've gotten at least a small reward or something of the sort.
