Today, I worked up the nerve to ask my boss for a raise. Today is also the day I found out my boss has a shitlist of employees he wants to fire, and that I'm now on it. FML

Healthy work environment
Today, I summoned the courage to go into my boss’s office and ask for a raise. He yelled at me, called me “ungrateful”, asked how dare I ask him such a question, and that I’m lucky to even have a job in the first place. I ended up reduced to tears. FML
Today, my boss was fired by the board. A few days ago, he dropped several strong hints that he was going to promote me soon. FML
Today, I walked into my boss's office to ask for a raise, and walked out unemployed. FML
I deserve a raise and fall
Today, I finally mustered the courage to ask my boss for a raise. I confidently walked into his office, ready to present my case, only to trip over the edge of a rug and fall onto his desk, scattering papers and stuff everywhere. FML
Know your place
Today, I asked my boss for a raise. I pointed out that due to a technicality, if he hired someone to replace me, he'd have to pay them more anyway. He said he'd gladly pay more for "someone who knows his goddamn place" and made it clear I'll be jobless very soon. FML
OK thx goodbye
Today, I asked my boss for a raise. He responded with, "Who the hell are you?" FML
Today, my boss found out I had applied for a much better paying job. He told me I'd do a better job and make more money there. Then he fired me. FML
Today, I asked my boss for a raise. He gave me a cupcake. FML
I don't wanna…
Today, my spineless shitwhip of a boss made me go fire a notoriously abusive employee. I had to act like firing him was my decision, even though I'm the secretary. Now I get to live in constant fear that the guy was serious when he threatened to find out where I live and kill me. FML
Today, my boss got a promotion and I got laid off. FML

If you feel you deserve one then good for you for asking. If you're a loyal employee and actually do your job then it will suck for your boss if he actually let's you go.

Your boss sounds like a major prick. It doesn't hurt to ask. If they say no then let it slide.

Wonderful timing, OP. Time to kiss some major ass.

I'm not sure how productive that would be and the guy is clearly a prick so they might be hesitant to do that. I'd be updating my CV/resume and assessing my options.

Not necessarily kiss ass but rather just performing your job in a proper manner so that way he has no reason to fire you.

I agree with #16, if OP is doing what is expected and going "above and beyond" from time to time.. it makes for a much happier boss! Plus, I feel like bosses know when they're being sucked up to.

Agreed. If you're a good worker, and worth the compensation you asked, based on your skill, experience and industry standards. There shouldn't be too much difficulty finding a new niche for yourself, in such a circumstance.

Maybe just ignore trying to get a raise for now and just try to keep your job. Best of luck!
zBLAKEz 23
He needs a valid reason to fire you though. Otherwise it's wrongful termination.
NandaPanda 22
That depends. If OP lives in a right-to-work state, then his boss can fire him for any reason he sees fit.

Whoops! Let me correct myself, since I didn't catch my error in time to edit my previous comment. I didn't notice that it said OP is from Austria. Since I do not know their laws, my comment may be null and void.

Don't know the labor laws in Austria but I doubt they're like they are here in the states. Where you can be totally useless and still keep your job as long as you show up on time and don't break any rules.
zBLAKEz 23
If you're "totally useless" though you can't keep your job. You have to actually be doing your job. If you're not doing it right then it doesn't matter if you show up on time, you can be fired. Those laws are just to protect people from getting fired for really stupid reasons, like the boss just doesn't like the person for no real reason. (Which does happen)

Here in Brazil, the boss can fire you for whatever reason if he wants, but if he doesn't have a valid one, he has to pay you a compensation. So bosses will usually think twice before firing people randomly. Unfortunately, though, that also leads to bosses making their employees lives as hellish as they can without breaking the contract in order to try and get them to quit by themselves instead so they won't have to pay...

In austria you can get fired for nothing and it's called "aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen" which translates into: 'because of economic reasons' which really sucks! Best of luck OP.

This is a good time to quit, you are in a dead end job.
StillUsesMyspace 22
join the real world, you can't just quit because someone spilled coffee on you. Bills don't quit when you quit....
