Assuming that you knew this was a problem, why the hell were you keeping your rabbit in an area where he could continue eating it?

OP, "too much" carpet? Did you think there was an acceptable amount of carpet for the rabbit to munch? Why didn't you stop it or keep it in a cage or warren? Losing a pet sucks and I won't say YDI but you certainly didn't deserve to have the rabbit in the first place.
