Today, I was holding a yard sale. A man came up to me and asked if he could buy a pair of red and white sneakers that I'd found in my attic and had never worn. Five bucks later, he was walking away with what I now realize was the pair of shoes signed by Michael Jordan given to me by my uncle. FML

Why would you sell sneakers for five dollars anyway. More like fyl for letting him sign beat-up/ extra athletic shoes.
I bet he's going to make a killing off of that... especially since they were mint condition, too. That sucks... pay closer attention next time :).
Depends...without a certificate of authenticity from somewhere reputable they might not be worth the five bucks. But there are suckers everywhere....
A certificate of authenticity? Really? Those are pretty much worthless. After all, who's to say the certificate is authentic?
No, all that's really necessary is that someone can recognize the signature, which is much easier.
The only way to ensure you have an authentic Michael Jordan autograph is if it has a holographic Upper Deck sticker (I think its an UD sticker) with it. It hasn't always been this way so some without it may still be real. He has a contract with Upper Deck and thats why the sticker has to be there and also why he can't/won't sign autographs for people because it has to have that sticker and I don't think he carries them around with him.
So you didn't notice the signature? You just give random people random things at any cost? What are you willing to sell next time?

That's probably because that movie was based on Michael Jordan's childhood and how he found some shoes for really cheap and became a good basketball player. Or something like that. The OP is sad that he won't be able to become good at the basketballs.

Well, even though it sucks, if they ARE in fact real, you have no way of proving it unless you have actual photos of him signing them, or a certificate of authenticity... so it's mainly the personal value. Most likely, you or even the guy you sold them to couldn't get much money for them.
My fiance has a few signed cards from Theo Flurry (I think... don't really pay attention all the time) because Theo used to date the sister of one of his friends, and he played hockey with them one day. He knows they're not worth anything, except to him. There was someone else that is the son of a guy who owns a card store in Red Deer Alberta that took him and a friend out to lunch when he went to visit his dad, because they spent all their money there as kids and were there when he came to visit. I can't remember who it was, but he signed some stuff. And then there was another hockey player from New Jersey that has a beach house, and a friend of ours went and got his brother's banner signed... just went out to his place and knocked on the door. I'm sorry... I can't remember names... the preggo brain is killing me...
Anyway, it's all about sentimental value is my point....

When I was about 5 years old my best friend gave me a toy. So i decided to give him something as well. I found a cute little ducky that squeaks and gave it to him. He was very pleased with it and I was very proud of myself. As he walked away with it my mom had a glum face which she later explained to me that the toy- duck was her childhood toy that she had since birth. Full of guilt; I contacted my friend so he could return it for something in exchange. He lost it.
I know i deserved that though, but it still haunts me even though my mom is fine with it. I still feel very guilty :P
