Today my friend told me that he was having a scrabble tournament at his house with a bunch of our friends. I told my dad about the tournament and he gave me a special scrabble dictionary to bring. Hesitantly I brought the dictionary and as I walked in everyone was playing beer pong. FML

It is clearly sarcasm, because anyone who goes to someones house for a scrabble tournament might be a loser. Whereas beer pong is a real game that requires skill and tolerance.....plus its a lot more fun.
skill and tolerance? drinking beer? Really now?! Scrabble ACTUALLY requires you to use your brain: make the words, anticipate your opponents move(just like in Chess;you do know what Chess is right?) and figure out the best way to play fewer words for maximum points. Then again, I'm guessing you have never seen a Scrabble board,can't tell how many tiles there are or even played a single game of scrabble or even won.

Well tbh, I know a lot of guys good at beer pong, and not so many good at scrabble.
i'd be much more impressed with someone who could beat me at scrabble :P
Oh and learn to make coherent sentences that are spelled correctly. There's another reason for playing scrabble: it gives you a chance to take a gander inside a dictionary.

My family plays Scrabble. I started playing when I was 6 and some 17 odd years later I'm still playing. Does it make me a nerd? Maybe but I'd rather be a nerd than a drunk fool who may end up in the hospital with injuries from drunken antics.
IMO, I think the OP thought his/her life was fucked because the friends may have lied to them which in turn means they lied to their parents and how many of you would be so gung-ho if you somehow ended up in the hospital and your parents who thought you were having a safe game of scrabble ends up knowing you were drinking? That can't bode well for you. So cut OP some slack.
For the ones questioning who still plays scrabble, you should try it sometime. Maybe then, you'd stop confusing "their" with "there", "your" with "you're" and ACTUALLY take the time to look into a dictionary long enough to learn the difference.
I'm British-American, have an Oxford scrabble dictionary and frankly I am proud of it. Then again it helps me as a teacher. In what special way does beer pong help you?

The timing of this post is impeccable... I'm currently sitting in bed browsing FML because I have trouble sleeping before (you guessed it) Scrabble tournaments. However, the tournament I'm attending has a first prize upwards of $4000 (http://www.cross-tables.com/download/2009/06/hartford.pdf) and I'm not getting tricked into attending a beer pong party. However, it is quite possible to enjoy both a "nerdy" activity and a more social activity as well; I play competitive Scrabble but I also play beer pong nearly every weekend. Yeah, Scrabble isn't stereotypically "cool" but even for those accustomed to playing drinking games it can be fun to play a more intellectually stimulating game once in a while. So to the original poster, if you enjoy Scrabble tournaments you should try to find a local competitive club to hone your skills. To the haters, Scrabble can actually be pretty intense when there are thousands of dollars on the line.
