#136: Of course I know that leather, eggs, dairy, etc come from captive animals. I tried to make very clear that I cut down on my use of animals wherever possible to do so without harming my standard of living to an unacceptable degree.

The only eggs I eat come from a local free-range farm, I don't drink much milk other than what goes in my tea, all my leathers are second-hand and have lasted years, and will last many, many more. I eat a lot of cheese (a main source of my protein), and I'm aware that male cows are slaughtered as a side-effect of the dairy industry, but hopefully it's far fewer than would be killed if I were eating them directly. My only unjustifiable luxury is a leather sofa.

Apart from that sofa, I try to only have an animal killed for my benefit when necessary, and will actively seek non-animal alternatives where possible. I'm not making a huge sacrifice (for example, I could give up cheese and stick to pulses if I was really committed), but the fact that I'm able to do it with barely any impact on my lifestyle goes to show that it's easy enough for most anyone to do it.

But that's me. I only have a small garden, and that's paved and gravelled. But had I spent countless hours of labour and a large amount of money on a living garden, only to watch it get repeatedly ravaged by wild animals who, at least around here, have plenty of other wild-growing food sources to choose from, then I might well be of the same mind as the OP.

I garden too, except I have a cool hand and a steady shot. I have no problem with animals at my garden because i keep a loaded pellet gun with a scope on it. The animals dart off when I start to open my window now.

You deserved it. Maybe you should have used your brain and went out to the store and bought some chicken wire and made a fence around your garden. That would have kept the rabbit out for good and you wouldn't have had to worry about killing it or ruining your pool. Hate to say fake, but a .22 is a very, very small bullet. A pool which holds 15k gallons is pretty big, that bullet (once it gets into the pool) is going to break apart, so there is only one hole.

Well. I don't know which city you live in, but where I live, it is illegal to discharge a firearm within city limits, so let's say your in my city, just for the hell of it. There are so many more ways to get rid of an annoying animal then using a gun. You can trap it and then release it where it won't come into contact with anyone ever again, [Yes that is a quote from Steve Irwin], or simply put up a fence or get a dog. People say you're a red neck, I just say your stupid as hell. Before you fire a weapon, you always keep in mind what is downwind of your target, and what you may be able to hit. Since it is a 22. rifle, which I also own, I can say the effective range is anywhere from 400 to 700 meters. Forgive me if I am mistaken. This is more then enough range in a city to go straight through a house or fence and possibly hit someone. It was also kinda stupid of you to not see your pool, or see it and think the 22. round wouldn't penetrate.

I have two gardens, one is fenced up, and the other is left out for the rabbits. They're also really good for eating my dandelions. But even if a rabbit was to eat my entire garden, I wouldn't starve OR get angry. As for mice and bugs, I use humane traps for the mice and set them free, and I'll be honest, I let the ants, spiders, and a few other bugs crawl through my basement. I just make sure it's as clean as possible. As for the people bringing up mosquitoes, I let them take whatever they want, but I tend to stay away from sugary things and they avoid me.

There are ways to keep unwanted creatures out of your garden. Invest in them. Do some research. A simple Google search would take you far.

I love how everyone is bitching about the rabbit. To the people who are telling this guy that he should die, take a deep breath and suck it up. It's a simple misuse of a gun, it doesn't justify anything that severe.

Then again, there are tons of better ways to protect your garden than killing the culprit. Get a dog, they keep rabbits away nicely. Ever since my family got a German Shepherd, my mom's garden has been rabbit-free.

5 gallons of water is about 2/3 of a cubic foot. So 15,000 gallons is 2,000 cubic feet. Most pools are about 4-5 feet of water. Let's be pessimistic and say it's 4 feet deep. That's only 4 feet by 20 feet by 25 feet.

That's not that big a pool, folks.

As for the rabbit, don't give me that animal rights nonsense. I'm sure he was shooting to kill. It's only "abuse" if he tortures the poor thing. As someone else pointed out, you don't go all nuts over mosquitos, now do ya? It was on his property, it was creating a nuisance. If he wants to shoot it, there's nothing wrong with doing that. It's not like rabbits are an endangered species. (Dogs are more effective, though...)

That said, YDI. The first thing you learn in every single firearms safety class is not to point a gun at something you don't intend to shoot. If the pool was in your line of sight, (that's "sight" not "site" folks), then your pool was going to get shot. Simple.

Besides, ANY leak in your pool was going to flood your basement. You need to figure out how you're going to prevent this from happening again when you trip while holding a screwdriver and puncture the pool again. Same result without all the fuzzy animals.
