Man or woman?

Today, I decided to tell my mother what I thought about religion. I've been raised catholic. I told her I was converting to Wicca, to which she sort of nodded and walked away. I went into my room to study with my earbuds in, music loud. I walked out to see a cross nailed above my door. FML

Well, what did you expect? YDI

#2 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:03am by tsunamisurfer08

FYL Catholics are the worst when it comes to not understanding other religions.

Now that you're studying wicca, though, remember the rule of three; someone's gonna come and spit on her insensitivity. All will be well.

#3 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:06am by nonotme

I sense a big theological debate in the works on this one any minute now

oh and atleast she didnt throw holy water on you screaming THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELLS YOU!!!!!!!!!

#4 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:06am by ZiggyMorrison

#3 Nah bro, what about Baptists?
And that was an awfully ignorant comment to make.

OP- could have been a lot worse.
Screamin' and rantin'.
A cross nailed to your door isn't that bad.

#3 and #8: don't judge other religions.

OP: FYL, but it could've been a lot worse.

#14 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:14am by fobfan14

YDI for converting to wicca. That's not a religion it's a way of saying that you're a rebellious teen that doesn't wanna do what your parents do. That's almost as bad as converting to Scientology.

Catholicism: the belief that eating a flying zombie will give you eternal life in the sky.

Hahah, funny shit

#21 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:16am by Wonderman

#14: I judge all religion as bad for society, but there are some that are worse than others.

#11: Google's your friend, but it's one of the Pagan religions, based around peace with nature and all living things. Its beliefs including never harming any living being except for food or self defense and the "Rule of Three" which states that if you hurt someone, you'll get hurt back three times as bad (and likewise, if you do good, good will come to you three times as strong). As far as religions go, it's probably one of the best out there.

#22 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:17am by nonotme

Wicca? Grow up.

#23 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:17am by kneegrow143

If you're not catholic anymore, why would you bother if there is a cross above your door? It means only that you have a caring mother... I don't know wicca though, maybe a cross is compelling the magical spirits? I think it isn't.

#24 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:18am by Mwoehaha

#20 you just made my day

#25 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:19am by ceecee794

I hate it when people assume Catholics are the worse about religious tolerance. Having been born and raised a Catholic myself, I've never come across intolerant or pushy ones (also, I live in a predominantly Catholic country). Some Christians, on the other hand, will shove heir beliefs in your face and piss you off to no end.

YDI, because more likely than not you chose Wicca because it's "cool".

#26 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:20am by loto

#15 and the rest of you guys who are bashing the religion, shut the fuck up. don't judge other religions just because of what you hear. if everyone was that way the world would fall apart. so to everyone who says that certain religions are stupid get off the damn computer and see that its 2009. we don't accept that anymore.

#27 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:21am by kcslgvr

Angsty teenagers are hilarious.

#28 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:21am by jolar1

All you haters need to grow up a little. Wicca's a legit religion and a hell of a lot better than most. Yes, I mean you, #23 (AND everyone else doing the same thing).

Stay strong and be proud. Blessed Be.

#29 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:21am by VioletStrange

#3(and everyone else insulting any religion) you are an idiot...!
I'm catholic and I have friends that aren't catholic and I don't care... so shut up and don't talk like all catholics are like that...

#30 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:24am by lalap

... No, I still stand by my belief that religions like Wiccan only exist because they cater to the belief of "misunderstood" angsty rebellious teenagers. When this child grows up, if he does, he'll realize one day that what hes doing is retarded and only does it out of rebellion of his probably over-zealous religious parents.

#31 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:24am by kneegrow143

#22 is right. I'm not Wicca but I don't think it's so bad. Paganism is pretty peaceful. And #15, you shouldn't just assume things. Why don't you fully research wicca and THEN see what it's like? Don't judge prematurely, it makes you look like an asshole.

The FML is that their mom doesn't want to even begin to understand why they chose to convert. Their mother is trying to press her beliefs upon her child. But it could have been a LOT worse.

Everyone should be able to choose their own beliefs.

By the way I don't have a religion but I do believe in Karma. If you don't that's okay. I'm not going to try to convince you you're wrong.

#32 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:24am by knitbitch

YDI for believing in man-made religions in the first place.

ALL RELIGIONS WERE / ARE CREATED BY HUMANS FOR POPULATION CONTROL.
EDUCATE YOUR SELF ON THAT...

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BELIEVE IN SOMETHING, BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A GOD AND LEAVE IT AT THAT.
THAT IS, AFTER ALL, THE BASIC FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPT OF ALL RELIGIONS.

sorry for the caps but come on...WICCA??? YDI!

#33 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:25am by Rockyio

#27, if it wasn't for religion we wouldn't have wars in the middle east, the holocaust (not blaming the Jews for that, though, Hitler was retarted), the crusades, the inquisition, and every religious persecution/genocide/purge known to man. And yes, it is 2009, and religion isn't that big a deal anymore. I'm a Christian, I just think the extremes people go to and things people will believe are ridiculous, i.e. Wicca, Scientology, etc.

#34 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:25am by bcrklein

If you live in your parents' house, you have to be aware that they get to decide...if you want to do something they disapprove of and not be criticized, support yourself and live on your own.

#35 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:26am by wordgirl

Haha.
Don't worry about what your mother does and says; religion is your choice.

#37 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:28am by Bo

Lol, wicca. I thought that went out in the nineties! When are you telling her you're a lesbian? That's the next usual step. I hope you didn't skip the dyeing your hair & painting your nails black part! That's step 1. If you're going to follow the standard emo teen formulaic pattern, you have to get it right!

#38 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:28am by kellster

haha @ 38

#39 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:29am by bcrklein

Well, that sucks.

#40 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:30am by SnakeGuy4000

I agree with #29
Wicca is a legit religion and just because it's not as appreciated as others doesn't mean it's worst.
Would you like it if I said: Catholicism? Hahaha that's some fucking bullshit right there.
You see, you wouldn't like that because it's YOUR religion and YOU believe in it.
So lay off insulting this person. And besides, Wicca is more or less NATURALISM. Using non chemical and all natural remedies to cure tons of different illnesses and such.
Basically all of #22's explanation is completely correct.

So seriously, all you religious-folk, if you don't like your religion insulted, don't insult others.

*And to the person who wrote this FML post, I say congrats to you for telling this to your mom. In the end it's your belief. If she doesn't like that... well that's unfortunate. She's showing her where she stands. She will come around. I'm just glad that when I told my mum I found out she believed in it as well. (I was raised a Catholic as well, guess only because of my father). In general, good luck :)

#41 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:31am by lawliet_L

I think it is really comical that people are like "Catholics suck, they are so intolerant" and then make fun of them. You make yourself sound so tolerant and accepting. Or I suppose you are only tolerant to religions that aren't Christianity. Got it.

Furthermore, I'm a converted Catholic and I haven't met a single intolerant Catholic, although I'm sure there are some. However, that is the case in any religion. If you want to see a religion that is intolerant in its very nature why don't you look up the Westboro Baptist Church.

#43 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:31am by tick_tock

If your not being rebellous and actually looked into the religion and are being legit about it than dont mind what these fuckers are saying it is in fact one of the most peaceful religions out there

If you guys think the concept is stupid try actually reading about you dumb fucks, there moral code is far superior and more logical to any catholics one everything is explaind

#44 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:32am by ZiggyMorrison

Agree with #15 and #38

And #43, actually.

#45 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:34am by ammali

You'll grow out of this phase and then look back and laugh: 'Wicca, what the hell was I thinking. God, I was an idiot!'
Until then...Happy Pentagraming!

Honestly though, nobody takes wiccan followers seriously.

#46 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:34am by ringles

#38-wicca is a religion, not a fad and its been around since wayyy before christianity and people have been practicing it for thousands of years. the emo thing is an extremely off stereotype.

and that really sucks. im sorry. dont let it get in your way

#47 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:34am by awesomeperson

"Wicca is a legit religion."

Sure, the same way saaaay, Scientology is a legit religion.

(as a side note, Firefox's spellcheck did NOT recognize "Wicca" or "Wiccan" but DID recognize Scientology, so according to those folk Scientology is more legit than Wicca).

As an agnostic who was raised Catholic, I know it really sucks when your parents don't accept your beliefs and try to get you to convert. And for everyone who's saying Wicca is stupid, please just shut up. It's not your place to judge anyone else's religion.

#51 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:37am by anamaia

#53 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:40am by superherostiner

#54 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:40am by nonotme

wicca...? seriously?

#55 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:42am by teezz1916

Turn the cross upside down and watch her flip.

#56 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:45am by ayashe

Legit religion is a bit of an oxymoron. Let alone applying it to a religion that believes they have magical powers.

Wicca has not been around longer than Christianity (not that it would give it any credibility if it had), but was invented in the 1950's for angsty teenagers. Does anyone know a wiccan who isn't an angsty teenager?

#57 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:45am by RichardMNixon

I would have to say that not only is your mother disrespectful of your beliefs, but she is a bitch.
If she can't respect your beliefs, then you have no reason to respect hers.

Take the cross down, and when you move out, don't speak to her.

Also for everyone saying that Wicca is just for angsty teenagers, get some respect because you are acting like condescending fools.
Just because she chose paganism over the other religions doesn't make her more "Wrong".

#58 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:45am by Smarty_

Don't condemn religion, condemn the people
everyone going on about how religion is stupid and which reliigions specifically have never even read the holy books.
You judge a religion by a book
a lot of "religious" people don't even follow the books like how they should be followed

Judging by these responses, don't tell people you're Wiccan. Just say you're a pantheist (the natural world divine). Blessed be. I'm sorry your mother is not someone who respects the beliefs of others. To help her understand, explain you know magick isn't real -- spells are just a more involved method of prayer.

#66 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:51am by elara15

Eh, all religions are passing fads.

#67 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:51am by asdtertrwttewt

LMAO, sorry I'm Hispanic...I know what you mean, I got a similar response when I said I was simply Christian and not really Catholic.

But realistically, you should have seen it coming.

#68 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:52am by jenMalfoy

You can use that to your advantage. Crosses do have pagan meanings behind them. Research what it is and accept it into your life.

#69 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:54am by nametags

P.S. #43 -- I grew up in a family of Catholics. People who don't agree with birth control, women's ordination, or letting priests marry, while stubbornly insisting transubstantiation is NOT metaphorical? Pretty intolerant to me. But you don't judge a religion by individuals.

#70 - On 05/23/2009 at 10:54am by elara15

Good for you :). It's good you told your mother about your beliefs. So sorry to hear she's so ignorant and intolerant though. I'm not a religious person, but I believe in God.

Wow @ all this bickering. There's no need to be condescending towards people who do follow a different religion. I think that's a big problem religious people have- they don't know how to respect people whose views differ from theirs. I like the way #33 thinks :).

#76 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:04am by xXMILKYCHUNKSXx

This is the main reason why i don't bring up to a lot of people that i myself am wiccan, too many misconceptions about it and lack of understanding. This is gonna be a sore issue for a while, if it doesn't drive the two of you apart completely. Best of luck.

#77 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:06am by xtremelifter

Pagan > Wiccan. YDI

And yes, there is a difference. Wiccan has been around since the 1900s, Pagan's been around since the beginning of time.

#78 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:07am by melanijade

#70 How is that intolerant? Those are beliefs of the religion, they believe it is wrong to use birth control because it is killing a baby to them, and as for priests marrying or women becoming priests those are just rules. So because they don't allow that they are intolerant of women and priests?

If you don't believe in the rules of Catholicism you don't have to be Catholic.

#79 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:08am by tick_tock

We're in the same boat. I too was raised Catholic. I am in the year long process of converting to Wicca. My mother reacted well to it. She was understanding. My super catholic grandmother can't comprehend it and thinks its a phase but whatever. I'm not going to bother fighting those who think this is not a real religion, because it's very difficult to cure close-mindedness. I have tried telling most people that I am pagan though because people tend to get the wrong idea when you lay on them that you are Wiccan.

But lawls at #61. A prime example of close-mindedness.

#83 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:14am by michelle4srs

Man if we didn't have religion there wouldn't be this bullshit arguing on the internet. It's ALL a fucking waste. Every single religion. Not just Catholicism or any one particular kind. All bullshit.

#84 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:16am by soulonfire928

you know what? its so sad that we have to argue about what religion they are becoming. they could be converting to the new "blue sox are the way to heaven" religion and this FML would still be awful. I am so sorry that your mother can't understand you have chosen a path more suitable to you, that will improve your llife greatly. I went to a catholic school kindergarden through high scool, and I can understand your pain. I had to hide who i really was and live in fear that somebody in authority would find out and I would get kicked out of school(yes, they can do that){and isn't that so accepting of them, BAH!} *side not to those who think wicca is for "rebellious teens* you need to do your history! pagan were around long before christians. your "christmas tree" -old pagan tradition. many catholic rituals(yes, RITUALS) are based on pagans beliefs, so that in the early days people would make an easy transition from one religion to another, or at least for the two to exist peacefully. I hope your mother becomes more understanding. and oh btw- just take the cross down. what's the worst she could do other than nail it up again?

#85 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:16am by raison_detre

Sucks that you've clearly got a fundie family, but honestly, YDI for event CONTEMPLATING wicca. Seriously.

#86 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:18am by fnool

FYL. All the Catholics I know are really mean. They antagonize me for being an atheist and try to convert me. The Evangelists I know are really nice. They accept me and look beyond beliefs.
Religion sucks.

#87 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:24am by xoGAMERCHICKx3

26- You do realize that Christianity is just a watered down version of Catholicism, right? Dipshit.

Good for you. When I came out and told my mom (hardcore Christian) that I was agnostic (then eventually turned into atheist when I lost all faith) she didn't handle it too well.

#90 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:33am by Crickets

My husband and I are agnostic. I've been blessed by psycho-religious strangers twice now. To each their own I say, but keep it to yourself. I despise when people try to push their beliefs on others.

#91 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:33am by 110879

#92 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:42am by quackquackquac

#88, You do realize that Catholics are Christians, too? Don't call other people idiots when you can't get your own terminology right.

As a Catholic, I would have to say that the people I have come in contact with in the church are some of the most tolerant people I know. The monks at my church planned and hosted an interfaith prayer service with all of the religious groups in our area (everything from Sikhism and Baha'i to Judaism and Islam) in honor of the Dalai Lama's visit to our city. The Dalai Lama and one of our priests presided over the ceremony in our Catholic church. How is that for tolerance?

In any religion, you are going to find people who are more open and tolerant of other concepts and ideas than others. The OP's mother isn't yet ready to open to her daughter and have a mature conversation about her daughter's beliefs and decisions.

OP, good luck on your faith journey. I hope you find what you are looking for.

you're surprised?

#94 - On 05/23/2009 at 11:43am by vag

Most of the uses of the word Christian in these comments should say Protestant. Most Protestants consider Catholics to be Christians, although there are disagreements about some major points.

#91 - I really don't get the hostility against evangelism. If someone believes you will suffer for eternity unless you repent, then what else do you expect them to say? Shouldn't you despise the people who believe you are going to Hell and yet do nothing about it?

the pagan religion (wicca) has been around for thousands of years, a lot longer than Catholicism. somehow people always seem to forget just how many Catholic/Christian holidays & traditions are based off of pagan ones. maybe all of you who commented with ignorant things like "it's just a fad" "quit being so angsty" "next you'll be a lesbian" etc, how about you educate yourself a little more before you open your mouth and talk about something you clearly have no idea about? you just sound like complete idiots, and only help strengthen the ignorant/racist stereotypes of Catholics/Christians/etc.
