Man or woman?

Today, I finally had time to talk with my boyfriend. We had a nice long conversation, which included him telling me how much I meant to him and that we really need to see each other more often. He concluded the speech twenty minutes later with "Which is why I really hope we can stay friends". FML

I agree, your life sucks (20973) - you totally deserved it (1417)

Couples can't stay friends after a romantic relationship, it just does not work.

#7 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:37pm by InfectedWithDrew

They can, that is until they meet someone new and it crushes you all over again.

#8 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:40pm by lauralatch

That is completely untrue, #7. Every single ex-girlfriend I have and I are still great friends, and I'm currently in a relationship. And all my relationships are quite romantic.

#9 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:45pm by frenchboy95

Plenty of couples stay friends after romantic relationships...yes its not the most common to to say it never happens is naive. It all depends on the people involved and if they can deal with the demise of the relationship with maturity and respect.

#12 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:48pm by SOMAgirl

There's nothing immature about not wanting to be friends with someone after a relationship.

FML for having a boyfriend that dumped you but is trying to still be friends. Forget that.

#36 - On 10/12/2009 at 9:17am by boone

He just didnt want to hurt your feelings, should have just left it short and sweet

#2 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:19pm by Sweny

10/10 for honesty

#3 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:20pm by wtfismyfml

Yeah agreed..at least he was honest and let the OP down gently (unlike some of the FMLs on this site). By the OPs wording she wasnt seeing or talking to her boyfriend often so its kind of understandable that the relationship deteriorated. At least her now ex was mature and handled the breakup like a caring adult even trying to save the friendship. I know breakups always suck, but in the grand scheme of things, this really isnt that bad.

#13 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:50pm by SOMAgirl

I guess he gets points for honesty, however it sounds like he gave her an effing speech that didn't sound like he was breaking up with her...just to end it with, "Which is why I really hope we can stay friends." That can suck quite a bit. Though it is better than him flat-out TRYING to be a jerk about it.

#25 - On 10/11/2009 at 5:40pm by SoreThroat

At least you still friends.

#4 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:24pm by PeaceLove_Music

So I must wonder... is this his way of breaking up, or of saying "If we DO break up, I hope we can still be friends"?
Because either way sounds valid to me.

#5 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:28pm by DameGreyWulf

bad timing on his part

#6 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:35pm by romanalcocer

don't date assholes. YDI

#10 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:46pm by AntiChrist7

Breaking up with someone doesn't make you an asshole right off the bat.

#15 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:55pm by DoomJeff91

whats the FML in this? the best relationships are the ones where your partner is your best friend.

#11 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:48pm by dbgtboy

Aw... That really sucks. But you'll find someone else

#14 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:51pm by Labamba

So, can you?

#16 - On 10/11/2009 at 2:58pm by Witchcraft

Oh no! no starbucks cookie?!

#18 - On 10/11/2009 at 4:21pm by XOfiestypixie

Actually, you're right.
No starbucks cookie? Forget the friendship.

#19 - On 10/11/2009 at 4:28pm by Ohnothingreally

You're right, she didn't. D:

End all means of communication now, OP.

#21 - On 10/11/2009 at 4:55pm by Witchcraft

#20 - On 10/11/2009 at 4:49pm by the_stereotype

the exact same thing happened to me on Friday :(

#22 - On 10/11/2009 at 4:57pm by RYthePIE

at least he didn't say "it's not you, it's me", right?

#23 - On 10/11/2009 at 5:08pm by whomevermayknow

i don't think i can handle seeing any more breakup stories on this site. come onnnnnnnnnn.

#24 - On 10/11/2009 at 5:21pm by xzy86

Wow you should be grateful he didn't dump you like a sack of potatoes. Ge'ez woman. if your so worked up about this, get off the computer and go fix it!

#26 - On 10/11/2009 at 6:57pm by stupiddumbblonde

You disappoint me....

.... because I thought your name said "stupiddumbledore" :c

#27 - On 10/11/2009 at 7:09pm by DameGreyWulf

I thought that too!!

But I agree with you - the OP actually got let down pretty gently, especially taking other break ups on this site into consideration. Boo-hoo. Your boyfriend said lots of nice stuff about you and that he wants to stay friends before breaking up with you. How awful!!

#29 - On 10/11/2009 at 9:35pm by skybeau

Lol, roflwaffle

#28 - On 10/11/2009 at 9:09pm by madmaverick99

are you sure he was your boyfriend to begin with? ahaha

#31 - On 10/11/2009 at 10:15pm by fuzzy_wuzzy

YDI for being ugly.

#32 - On 10/11/2009 at 11:43pm by FATTY_MCDOOGLE

So now you are just friends with benefits.

Anyone notice there seems like a disproportionate number of FMLs out of New Jersey? Coincidence? I think not... Lol.

#33 - On 10/12/2009 at 1:34am by FarSide

Not really. What is your preoccupation with New Jersey, though?
Are you on their "most wanted" list or something?

#38 - On 10/12/2009 at 7:10pm by girlygirl666

"Which is why I really hope you were planning on repainting your car sometime soon."

#34 - On 10/12/2009 at 2:35am by Ninjaface

Haha oh man what an asshole

#35 - On 10/12/2009 at 4:03am by jd_superjive
