Today, I went with my girlfriend to her parents' house. They told me I smelled of cheap vodka. When I told them I worked in a bio lab and used ethanol a lot, they said I was too stupid to do anything like that. My girlfriend broke up with me because her parents think I'm a drunk. FML

Why should she care so much about what her parents think? I know some people want their parents and their boyfriend to get along, but why should she dump you over that? She should've talked to her parents about it, instead of just dumping you because they think you're a drunk. If that's how little it takes for her to dump you, you're better off without her.

Ok I use Ethanol, Methanol, Acetone and Acid-Alcohol every day and I don't smell of them when I leave work!

I work with 200 proof ethanol, it evaporates very fast and doesn't leave a residue. Unless you bathed yourself in it in the car before meeting them they you shouldn't smell like alcohol at all.

@ 27: My ex's mom did something similar to me. I spent 6 yrs as a military medic and was examining a painful spot on my gf's foot that I could very easily tell was a plantar wart. Her mom (an extremely opinionated lady and nurse for 30+ years) came over and actually said "what the hell do you know?" to me in an extremely snide tone of voice. Being too shocked to say anything I let it go and took gf to a walk in clinic. An hour or so later we were back at her place and her mom wanted to know what the doc had said. She lost her smug little smile when gf told her that the doc said it was indeed a plantar wart. She was nasty to me for years... so glad that's over with.

Cheap vodka has a smell and if they were calling him a cheap drunk then they probably thought he drank so much he smelled like it. Plus some people exaggerate, and perhaps the parents meant he smelled like a drunk and vodka was the first alcohol that came out. I know vodka has a scent, my father was an alcoholic.So don't say just cause the stuff you buy doesn't have a scent that other brands do not. Perhaps you are such a raging drunk you don't notice the smell.

100% ethanol actually has a very strong smell.. did you hear that from a friend of a freind and actually have no idea what your talking about? oh and vodka is obviously not "pure" alcohol.. its diluted yes? thats why you can drink it... obviously.

I work in a biological lab as well, and work with different kinds of ethanol a lot too. At least enough to know that it doesn't leave an odour after it evaporates. So just confess the wodka, ok.. ;)
