I've often felt that this is the worst part of break-ups, you imagine the poor canine wondering, "Why doesn't she come around anymore? Was it something I did?" But, be re-assured, pets live in the moment, they don't ruminate about the past. That's healthy advice for you, as well.
I've actually been in this situation. An ex of mine and I parted on good terms, but I still miss her cats sometimes. They were hilariously sweet little critters. I'm sorry it hurts right now OP, but I promise it gets better over time. Cry as much as you need to, and I hope your heart heals soon!
Or maybe cause your real first love was with the dog not the boyfriend.
Was it an awful breakup? If not, maybe you could still take the dog for walks or such!
