denny's on a first date?

#5 - On 02/09/2009 at 2:55pm by dickery

Maybe he's a secret millionaire but is afraid you'll only like him for his money instead of his lack of manners.

What a girl can't buy a meal once in a while?

i hope you put out after a stellar, expensive dinner like that. Dennys is a real classy place

#10 - On 02/09/2009 at 3:41pm by greenman

Maybe he doesn't have money. But yeah honestly it's a funny story, but a honest, nice one at that. Honestly, not joke, I think the dude's a keeper. The very fact that he took you to Denny and made you pay with an expired coupon really shows that he has a unique mind. I don't think this is a FML though. Try another date if you really like him, perhaps he's just seeing what type of person you are or perhaps see what sort of reaction you'd have. Not a great first impression, but I think it's a test.

So, just out of curiosity, what is a good amount to spend on a first date? I recently took a girl out for the first time, and I ended up spending about $20 (I paid, of course), is that about right? We went out for coffee after that, and that time we each bought our own, was that out of line? I didn't want to make her feel like I was trying to "buy" anything from her...

my ex took me to the dollar movie on our first date. and i paid for my own ticket.

#13 - On 02/09/2009 at 6:54pm by wosa

#12, depends a lot on where you are in life/how much money you make. Now that I'm a working adult, spending $30-40 at a restaurant is no big deal. But if I were going out with, say, someone in grad school with no money, I wouldn't want him to pay that much. (For the record--I DON'T think guys should always have to pay. But I think the person who does the asking should pay for the first date. I've asked a guy out for coffee before, and would have felt silly making him pay for it.)

#14 - On 02/09/2009 at 9:06pm by answerer

At least you didn't have to pay for the meal.

#15 - On 02/09/2009 at 9:53pm by truth

yes she did.

#16 - On 02/10/2009 at 8:31pm by lifesucks

dump him. it's not about money, it's about courtesy. if he really wanted to impress you, he would have made sure the coupon was good.

#17 - On 02/10/2009 at 9:02pm by elsey5

Who the hell would 1. Go to a Denny's on a first date, 2. Use a coupon on the first date, and 3. Not have money anyway? Did you find him on the streets?

#18 - On 02/10/2009 at 11:46pm by BobSaget

Poor thing, you actually had to pay for your own food. Truly, my heart bleeds for you.

It sucks that he took you to Denny's for a first date, but who cares if you had to pay? I think the idea of guys always having to pay for the meal is just outdated. I'd be perfectly willing to pay on a date,

#21 - On 02/11/2009 at 4:48am by liquidskyfire

i ALWAYS pay.

OP lemme get yo digits.

Oh my god this girl had to PAY FOR HER OWN MEAL!????? When there was a MALE human present!?!!?!?!? Obviously since she has a vagina she is owed free food by any man unlucky enough to spend time with her in a restaurant. Count yourself lucky for finding a date.

#24 - On 02/11/2009 at 3:16pm by jkqd

No, I agree with #14. Assuming the guy asked her out (which it sounds like, since he picked the restaurant), it's courteous for him to pay on a first date. Same goes if a girl asks a guy out, she should pay. If someone agrees to go out with me, they are doing a nice thing for me. I'm not going to PUNISH them for that by making them pay on top of it! But I expect the guys I go out with to have the same philosophy. Like I said, it's just courtesy.
Plus....Denny's? Is pretty lame. I actually like cheap dates, but you gotta make them fun--go to a park, have a picnic (tough in winter), make dinner at home, find a free museum--there are tons of things better than Denny's. Or just go for ice cream or something!

#25 - On 02/11/2009 at 9:41pm by Kirsten

Kirsten, that would apply, if girls asked guys out. They don't. Well, maybe one out of a million do, once a year, but that's it.

Look, why can't we all just agree to split the bill? Seems like the most logical course of action.

#26 - On 02/12/2009 at 7:50am by Paul

Did he at least drive?

OMFG, first of all...Denny's on a first date
second of all...that guy needs to get some more money
last but not least...if that guy was really into you, he would plan his date more carefully.

screw him, there are much better fish in the sea

Okay, for everyone who thinks, "Oh, well, women need to learn to pay, too". That is NOT the point. The point is that HE invited her and HE took her out. If it had been her idea, it would have been a different story, but if he invited her, he's expected to pay. I mean, sure, I've taken my boyfriend out for dinner quite a few times (One time I had about $150 to spend on him), but if he says he's taking me out, that means he's paying, so I don't have to worry about it.

Something like that happened to my cousin, except it was with her dad and his fiance. My cousin's dad invited her and her boyfriend out to dinner to Red Lobster. My cousin's dad and fiance got drunk and ate a bunch of food, then said they didn't have any money, and left.

why are you so cheap? you should pay more often

Thats pretty bad, but then again I was totally broke for a while a took a girl to get McDonald's dollar menu, fortunately I bullshitted by way out of it by taking her somewhere to have a picknick and said I planned it that way. Also, I agree with 32, my girlfriend takes me out sometimes just to mix it up and it is awesome to go where ever you want to for once

if a guy takes you to denny's on a first date, that should tip you off that he's not prince charming. then again, i guess denny's is a fancy place in most southern states... for your next date you should take him to the dentist to fill in all those missing teeth.

I feel sorrier for the guy in the story putting up with the OP for an entire meal. She must be a real treat to spend time with. You have a lot of growing up to do.

I don't see how this is bad. The guy took you out on a date, and thought he was going to pay, but realized that his plan to pay wouldn't work out. What happened to "It's the thought that counts"? No offense, but I find it pretty bitchy to complain about a guy trying to treat you well. So what if you had to pay? There's no law that says guys ALWAYS have to pay, and like I said, he tried to. Sounds like you don't deserve him.
