(+1)I agree. I think I was less then 10 months old before I quit. For my brothers it was a little bit longer, but by 2 they were gone for good, thrown in the trash and destroyed.
It's really not that hard to take something away from a child, they get over it.
YDI for letting your son get to this point, and YDI even more for complaining. He's 20, it's his choice to make now. If he wants to be a baby and suck on a pacifier, that's his call. Maybe it's time to cut the apron string and make him become a man.

(0)If your parents never gave you a pacifier, even at 2 months of age, you probably sucked your thumb or something else. I have never heard of a baby that calmed themselves without a pacifier or something to suck on.
(0)When I was a baby I refused a pacifier. My mom talks about wanting me to take one when I cried, but I just wouldn't. I also never sucked my thumb, or anything of the like.

I've heard of 6-7 year olds who still sleep with them, but if he hasn't been weaned off it by now, I'm guessing it's turned into a full blown habit, such as people who won't stop sucking their thumbs, nail biting, or at his age, I think cigarettes would be a bit more appropriate (not that I'm encouraging it).

Stopping would be as difficult as quitting smoking, because the same kind of relief comes to him that comes for smokers. However, it's really a fairly harmless attachment, so it doesn't really matter. It's a little weird, but eh. People have quirks.

(+2)I agree with whatwasthatnoise. Most people use blankets or comforters anyway, so who cares whether you're using your baby blanket or a different one? However, you can't really say the same about a pacifier. Not to mention using a pacifier for too long puts you at risk of buck teeth (just like sucking your thumb). Using your baby blanket is not going to put you at risk of anything. I still have the teddy I got when I was born, and slept with it on my bed til I was 20. Massive difference between teddies/blankets and pacifiers.
(0)Actually, FOR THE MOST PART (emphasis), the dental problems are an oldwives tale. It depends on how hard the person sucks on the thing they're sucking on (i.e. thumb or pacifier) and how well it fits in their mouth (thumb size/pacifier size). I STILL suck my thumb and I'm one of the few I know who never had (or needed) braces. The whole thing CAN BE fairly harmless.

(+1)OP's son could have some emotional disorders or be extremely stressed. It's an oral fixation and it's soothing to him. For example, people will stop smoking, but take up gum chewing instead.
No one's mentioned this, but it's also possible that OP hasn't been doing this his whole life and it's a new development, in which case, if he's not a raver, it really probably is an emotional problem.

(0)My mom would only let me use a pacifier in the house (she thought it looked ugly in public) and one day when I was maybe one and a half or two, I dropped it in my diaper. My mom said, "oh well, now it's dirty, goodbye pacifier!" At that age I believed there was only one pacifier, and that I'd just messed it up, and that was the end of it! As a previous commenter said, it's easy to take things away from little kids. At this point you're (and moreover, he's) just out of luck.
A friend (32 years old) still sleeps with her childhood doll, but I think things like a doll, teddy bear, or blanket are way different than a pacifier. That's just unfortunate.

Any parent who would seriously not deal with this after so much time totally deserves it. Some kids won't let go as easily as others, but if you can't figure it out in that much time you deserve it. (+1)Uh, you guys, this is something called AB/DL (adult baby/diaper lover). It's not the parent's fault if their child is into this. They did not fail as a parent. An AB/DL simply wants to return to their childhood and be innocent again. It is sometimes sexual, but not always.
Now, OP, your son does not have a mental disorder if he does this in private. If he acts like a baby in public, I'd be worried. But if he does something in the privacy of his own room, it's probably not a problem. We all have skeletons in our closets. (or he could just have an oral fixation and not be an AB/DL.
