he probably wasn't waving at you. in fact, he probably was waving at your friend to come over to have a drink and talk it up. but when you came over, he merely stated it was your friend he wanted to talk to. and the reason he didn't go over to talk to your friend directly is because he noticed that you kept looking at him, and assumed that if he tried to talk to your friend, you would cockblock him...
though i agree with other comments about how it makes him seem like a coward that he didn't go over in the first place
