Today, I learned my dad is the kindest, most generous, hard-working soul anyone has ever met. He'll give someone the shirt off his back if they need help. Except for us, his immediate family, whom he screams and cusses at daily, expects to do everything ourselves, and thinks we're incompetent when we need help. FML

Today, my dad is infuriating by increasingly asking me to do things around the house, but because he doesn’t like how I do them he yells at me and then does it himself. It’s almost like he cares more about inventing excuses to yell at me than he does to actually get things done. FML

Today, I found out that the man I called grandpa for 40 years is really my dad. My drunk aunt spilled the beans. Her exact words were, "My dad is a better dad to you than he EVER was to me! You never wondered why he treated you better than his other grandchildren? You're his son!" FML

Today, my son was crying and my dad's way of helping was to go to the pub for an hour, then come back after my son had cried himself to sleep. I’d have kicked him out but he does a lot of other things around here, and I couldn’t cope without him. It doesn’t stop him being an insensitive prick. FML

Today, I learned that now that my mom is dead, and my dad doesn't need my emotional support during her illness anymore, he's going to go back to insulting me every time he talks to me. FML

Sadly, and I am guilty here too, we as fathers fall into a parenting trap where we raise our kids the same way we were raised. Just so you know, we often see this and hate ourselves for it when we see how we are just like our parents. It totally sucks big green donkey dongs. It takes a lot of conscious work to not be like that. Somehow you have to get through to him how he is treating you and make him see that, that parenting style doesn't work for anyone. I'm sorry you have to go through this. As I said, I have been this same way and it took a lot of effort to break myself of being just like my examples. I hope you can find the right way to get through to him.
