Today, I was working at a coffee shop. I was serving a customer when a cockroach appeared out of nowhere, and I screamed. Customers aren't supposed to know about the bugs so I had to lie and say I spilled coffee on myself, and served the customer while I felt the bug climbing up my leg. FML

bubblooz tells us more.

Hey! it's the OP posting. I'm very surprised this got posted. Here is some information about the fml/my job. 1) We had a health inspector come last week and our place passed the exam. We are actually a very clean place. 2) The bug problem is being taken care of. There are traps all over the place and a pest control guy is coming in soon. Bugs are very hard to get rid of. Once eggs are laid, they will stay there forever. And the place used to be a KFC. 3) We barely see the bugs actually crawling around. That's a reason why I screamed, it was my first time actually seeing one. 4) Bugs do not go in the drinks or food. Customers watch me make their lattes, pour their coffee, heat their wraps, etc. 5)Even if the health inspector didn't come, if I was to complain and the place shut down- me and all my coworkers would lose our income. Also, typically every food place has their dirty secrets like this. Welcome to the food industry. 4) I am only 16 years old, however I need this job. I can't afford to quit. I pay my cell phone bill and majority of my necessities, and I am saving up for university. 5) I have been looking for a new job for a few months. I am handing out resumes constantly at malls and applying online. It's not easy... especially because I'm a part time student with little experience. The moment I have another job, I will give my two weeks notice in. And also, this experience was horrifying. I screamed so loud I startled the customers. I hate bugs. Once I was finished serving the customer I ran to the bathroom, got the bug off me, and then adjusted my pants so I could tuck them into my boots. I appreciate all the comments and the funny jokes!

Sounds like a horrible place if they hide a bug problem instead of fixing it.

That is absolutely disgusting. The health department should be informed if it's bad enough for you to say 'the bugs'

Dude, I think I was that customer, are you working at subway in Aylmer? If not then never mind

Shame on you for helping hide their bug problem. Do you realize that while working there you breathe in particles of their shit all day long?? Actually putting yourself at risk for chronic respiratory issues. Not to mention that you are risking infesting your own home with those nasty disease carrying bugs. I'm sure your family will appreciate that.

I am trying to keep my job, and there are bug traps all over the place and pest control is coming this week. There is not too much but there is still some. my café is extremely clean as well. There are many other food places that have it 10x worst and I can assure you I am not bringing any diseases into my home. we passed our health inspection.

Bugs are always going to be there. You can't just prevent it and, honestly, so long as they keep themselves to themselves they're not actually going to do any real harm

That's disgusting! The customer has every right to know that there's bugs there

Where do you work? Just so I know where never to go for coffee again

Ugh, this reminds me of the chow hall in basic training. So many freaking roaches.

You are doing yourself and your customers a huge disservice by not reporting the coffee shop....how would you feel if you ate in a restaurant and the waiter didn't tell you there were cockroaches or rats running around?

well if I was a customer and saw a bug at the establishment I would leave , I wouldn't even bother grabbing the order . so I can see why the business doesnt want everyone knowing cause no one would go there (they should deal with the issue before it gets worse).

It's nearly impossible to keep every single bug out of every building especially where food is present. I had the same thing happen to me at a coffee shop I worked at only the roach was near my hand next to the register. I told the customer only because it was a coworker in the large store. It should have already been dying but bug guys came to put sticky traps up. Hopefully you won't see it again!

Wow, I've worked in food for 12 years and there are bugs( maybe for a short time) at every one of them. My husband was stationed in Hawaii and they are everywhere there. Customers saw the cockroaches there and it didn't phase them cause they are even in your homes. I find it funny that people are saying " go to the health department" more than likely they tell them to get them out in a time frame and if not the rating might go down a bit. Heck the FDA allows a small% of bugs in every food. In no way am I saying it's ok but most people are oblivious to what goes on.
