Managers are usually on salary, so they tend to work a lot of unpaid overtime. And someone on the first day of their new job is expected to put their best foot forward and follow instructions.
It's your first day. If you can't be on time on your first day, why would you manager expect you to be on time ever again? I get that shit happens and sometimes you're late, but first impressions matter and making a bad one with your new boss by being late can get you fired.
Unless, there was some severe circumstances that prevented you from getting their on time I'm not sure how this is a surprise. If something serious was happening and you knew always call if you think you can't make it on time. This time of the year is big for roadwork to be done and it can take longer. Other than that, it's on you.
