Today, I found out my long-distance boyfriend was trying to pick fights with me and start pointless arguments because he wanted a ticket out of the relationship. He wanted to find a reason to break up with me, rather than confess he has a local girlfriend. FML

Most of them do not work, but not all. My wife and I dated long distance for 2 years before getting married and her moving closer, and we had been chatting but not involved for several years before that in large part due to the distance. I also had a friend who did a PhD living in a different state than his wife for ~4 years. The keys are 1. sincere trust, communication and desire on both parts, 2. plans to visit each other regularly with each visit starting planning after the last, 3. a bit of patience, flexibility and understanding, and most importantly 4. realistic plans to end the distance and move closer in a timely manner. And even then it's still more likely to not work out than to work out.

These far distance relationships FML stories lately have just been absolutely sad. Please everyone, just don't do it. Far distance relationships never work. Ever.
