Just like starting over

Today, I was at Aldi when I realized I'd left my wallet at home. I tried to convince the cashier to let me pay with an IOU, but they just gave me a skeptical look and said, "This isn't the 1880s, dude." I had to leave my cart of groceries and walk out empty-handed. FML

he would literally be fired if he accepted that. cashiers get punished for literally everything the customer does.

IOU's are not how business works anymore, dude. The store would have no guarantee that you didn't just skip off with your groceries and the cashier is not allowed to take IOU's or they would get fired. One time I was a kid and my mother had forgotten to take her card on a grocery trip, which we found out at the register. We asked if they could put the entire cart in the freezer in the back, they did, and we hauled tail to get the card and get back as fast as possible. You could have done something like that.

Even worse, you lost your quarter for the cart rental!

This is why I keep some cash in my car, and google pay on my phone.

I'm hoping the IoU was a joke made because of embarrassment and not a legit offer. If it was the OP needs a reality check.

OP: "Wouldst thou accepteth an IOU?" Cashier: "The ****?" Queen Victoria: "Dude, it's 2023. You can use your phone. Get with the times."

Did you seriously expect they were going to let you take away a cart full of groceries without paying?

How do you forget your wallet? That means you were also most likely driving without your license, which is another crime. Yeah, that's how the world works - no money, no items. They're not going to just let you take it even if you were legit telling the truth and would return with the money.
