Today, I already hate the holidays. My mom has been trying to be helpful, but has severe undiagnosed memory problems that our family ignores. They've also ignored all the house repairs, but have no problem consoling her while she cries how mean I am for missing her party, because I used my vacation time to fix the house. FML

Today, besides the fact that I hate Christmas since my parents divorced, my mom told me she can't come this year with my sister because of no money. We even offered to pay for their tickets, but she won't come because of the "last minute" stress. Fuck this year. FML

Today, like every day for the past two years, my aged mother has sat complaining all day loudly about relatives who call too little or too much, about another package being a few days late, or her laptop and TV not working properly. Today, I’m convinced my mother in law comes over every holiday just to make me miserable. She comes in, criticizes me food, snarks then ignores the kids. I dread every holiday and spend it getting drunk and casting F-you glances at my husband. Is it wrong to buy her a casket for the next holiday? Is it really? FML

Stinky mom

Today, my mom once again cried that I never come to visit her. I’ve tried, but her house is just unbearable. It’s always no less than 80°F inside, and she also refuses to clean up. She just burns multiple candles and air fresheners all day to mask the smell. She refuses any cleaning help I offer. FML

Chances are your other relatives are aware of Mom’s memory problems and they are just going along with whatever she says instead of arguing with a person with dementia. It’s pointless to argue with a person with dementia. So don’t assume they think you are a bad son because you took care of her needs to have a safe house to live in instead of attending her party. And if they are dumb enough not to be aware of the situation you shouldn’t worry what idiots think. While parties and feelings are nice, having a safe home to live in is really more important and you were a good son to repair Mom’s home. Unfortunately you can never predict what a person with memory issues is going to remember and what they are going to forget.

Unless they have financial issues, if they keep taking advantage of you for free house repairs, insist on getting paid. Otherwise, outright refuse. Your mom needs to be assessed by a doctor and possibly placed in long term care, if only to get away from your toxic family.

The repairs can wait until after the party. Fixing shit doesn't get you cake -- parties do! Where are your priorites, man? It goes: Cake, family, country, deity (optional), celebrities, house, etc. Got it?
