Clout demon

Today, my uncle is posting on Facebook for clout about how his mom died of COVID. She actually died of sepsis from severe Alzheimer's. He was at the hospice meeting, and his wife and daughter held her hand when she passed. She also died two years ago. FML

Let your uncle use this cover story about his mom without publicly confronting him. And don’t get into a big private confrontation either. I agree with you that this is both dishonest and unnecessary. But especially for older generations, mental illness, dementia, etc were things that many people hid and refused to talk about. It’s possible that uncle fears that people will start looking carefully at him and judging him if they think “like mother, like child” that he could have a predisposition towards dementia or Alzheimer’s… I believe that it’s relatively rare when “confrontation” creates a better situation. There are times when confrontation is necessary and inevitably, but I don’t think this subject is one of those times. Everyone closely related to the departed is hurting right now.

Maybe he forgot? Alzheimer's runs in families.

and when mental illness runs in the family, it can be terrifying. sometimes people simply can not accept reality and do everything they can to avoid it out of fear. there is also a good chance a lot of the family already knows he is not telling the truth and chooses to let him be because like you said, it doesn't make these sorts of things better.
