You never know
Today, I was fired for not asking a senior citizen for proof that he was over 21 and legally allowed to purchase alcohol. When I told my manager he was clearly over 21, he replied, "But what if he WASN'T?" FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I refused to serve a woman alcohol, as she looked underage. She complained to my manager about "age racism." FML
Today, while buying drinks, the cashier immediately refused me and said, “Don’t even bother showing me your ID, you’re obviously 12." I’m 31. FML
Today, I got fired from my new job on my first day. Why? Because I'm 19 and company policy says you have to be 21. But they can't ask how old you are. FML
Today, when I went to the gas station to buy beer, some underage punk outside asked me to buy him booze. I told him to get bent, but the dumbass cashier had seen me talking to him, and refused to let me buy alcohol because, "This is obviously a sting." FML
Today, I got fired from my job. My manager found Facebook pictures of me drinking underage at a party. He said he didn't want "that kind of image" associated with the business. It was his birthday party. He supplied the booze. FML
Today, I sold a customer some beer. He then asked to see the manager, and told me he was a 19 year-old undercover cop. My knee jerk reaction was to panic and curse aloud, before realizing he was balding, toothless, probably 50, certainly not a cop, and laughing at me for being such a gullible moron. FML
Today, I tried to buy a bottle of wine from the supermarket. The scrawny, acne-ridden kid at the checkout asked to see my ID. I didn't have any on me, since I'm 37 years old and didn't expect to be asked stupid questions. I complained to his manager, only to be asked to leave. FML
Today, I was refused employment at a liquor store. Their reason? I'm a regular customer and they're afraid I'll drink all their profits. FML
Today, a cute thirty-ish chick walked into the bar I work in. I asked her for her license to make her feel young. She didn't have her license on her and started yelling about how stupid it was to even ask, when she obviously was old enough to drink. She then got up and left. FML
Today, I went to buy some beer using my fake ID, when the cute cashier and I started flirting. When he asked me how old I was, I said without thinking, "Nineteen." FML

In the UK (or at least the part where I live) we have "challenge 25" where the cashier has to ask for ID if they think the customer looks under 25.

my family owns a liquor store and they sold a pack of cigarettes to a girl who looked well over the age of 21 but she was actually only 18, in Alabama you have to be 19 to buy cigarettes, she was an ABC board agent and they got fined 2k even though she looked of age.

Depends on state laws and company rules. My case isn't exactly the same, because I give samples rather than selling it, but I still have to card EVERYONE. Our state law says you only have to do it if they're under 40, but company policy states otherwise and I would get fired if I didn't card a 92 year old person. It's something I get bitched at for every single day.

It's a way of complimenting and making the elder people feel equal to those of younger age. "Damn, you look youthful, I'm gonna need to see some identification."

In WA you are supposed to card everyone. My brother and I were carded at dinner (my kids with me) and they carded my parents who were also there. It's clear they are over 21 if they have grand babies, but it's policy. Better safe than sorry

It's the law to card regardless of if it's obvious. ydi
