You never know
Today, I was fired for not asking a senior citizen for proof that he was over 21 and legally allowed to purchase alcohol. When I told my manager he was clearly over 21, he replied, "But what if he WASN'T?" FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I refused to serve a woman alcohol, as she looked underage. She complained to my manager about "age racism." FML
Today, while buying drinks, the cashier immediately refused me and said, “Don’t even bother showing me your ID, you’re obviously 12." I’m 31. FML
Today, I got fired from my new job on my first day. Why? Because I'm 19 and company policy says you have to be 21. But they can't ask how old you are. FML
Today, when I went to the gas station to buy beer, some underage punk outside asked me to buy him booze. I told him to get bent, but the dumbass cashier had seen me talking to him, and refused to let me buy alcohol because, "This is obviously a sting." FML
Today, I got fired from my job. My manager found Facebook pictures of me drinking underage at a party. He said he didn't want "that kind of image" associated with the business. It was his birthday party. He supplied the booze. FML
Today, I sold a customer some beer. He then asked to see the manager, and told me he was a 19 year-old undercover cop. My knee jerk reaction was to panic and curse aloud, before realizing he was balding, toothless, probably 50, certainly not a cop, and laughing at me for being such a gullible moron. FML
Today, I tried to buy a bottle of wine from the supermarket. The scrawny, acne-ridden kid at the checkout asked to see my ID. I didn't have any on me, since I'm 37 years old and didn't expect to be asked stupid questions. I complained to his manager, only to be asked to leave. FML
Today, I was refused employment at a liquor store. Their reason? I'm a regular customer and they're afraid I'll drink all their profits. FML
Today, a cute thirty-ish chick walked into the bar I work in. I asked her for her license to make her feel young. She didn't have her license on her and started yelling about how stupid it was to even ask, when she obviously was old enough to drink. She then got up and left. FML
Today, I went to buy some beer using my fake ID, when the cute cashier and I started flirting. When he asked me how old I was, I said without thinking, "Nineteen." FML

2 Weiss for you: company policy

Unless his company has that policy, which a lot of stores do have. Which is why he got fired. Stupid policy in this story, but there is a reason the policy is in place.

You can't win in those situations. But isn't there a law about not being required to ask if the customer looks over a certain age?

Who would possibly go through the effort of making themselves appear that age for alcohol? Underage kids who want alcohol aren't anywhere close to that clever.

actually a lot of companies are switching to the under 40 policy.

Well if you knew that's the company's policy you should've asked anyways. When I worked in retail I always enjoyed asking senior citizens for their ID, we'd both be amused by it

This is one of those situations where you have to ignore common sense and 'play the game'. Like others have said, if your company has an 'ID everyone' policy then you should have followed it, regardless of your personal feelings. However an Instant dismissal seems very harsh - is this your first 'offence'?

Well, haven't you ever seen Bejamin Button? You could very well have sold alcohol to a toddler.

I have worked in two stores and in one we were suppose to ask no matter what age ( it was a chain grocery store) in the other we were only suppose to ask if the person looked younger than 30 ( that was a family owned store). In both stores if we had waited on them before we didn't have to ask for ID. Every state is different though and every state has their own laws when it comes to the sale of alcohol.

My store policy is that if the customer has white hair growing out of their nose and/or ears, it's probably not necessary to ID them.
