Today, after 7 years of writing my PhD thesis, I found a book containing all the exact findings I've spent arduous hours, nay, years discovering. My tutoring professor somehow forgot to mention I was discovering sealing wax. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I was certain that over the six years of struggling through my Ph.D., I had culminated in one truly original idea. Until I saw it published in another thesis, from 1953. FML
Today, I held a presentation about my masters thesis. Turns out, my professor never ever actually read the drafts I'd given him, but decided to rip me to pieces in front of everyone, saying that the topic isn't worth researching. I've been working on it for six months. FML
Today, I finished my 83-page thesis for my Stanford class and put it on my desk. Then, as a prank, my girlfriend hid it. She forgot where she put it. The thesis is due in 3 days. FML
Today, I found out that my stick figure drawing passed as homework during my doctoral level seminar. I'm paying over two thousand dollars for this course. FML
Today, I walked into my office and found my ex-roommate going through my desk. Apparently, despite not wanting to be friends or even speak anymore, he has no qualms about "borrowing" my Master's thesis so he can compare and write his. FML
Today, I finally found my watch after weeks searching for it. It was on my teacher's wrist. FML
Today, my professor handed me back a paper I spent hours hours working on. At the bottom in red it said "D" followed by, "That was a gift." FML
Today, I just spent the last 3 years working on a research project and published about it, read by a multitude co-authors and proofreaders. My mum just spotted it has the word "asses" in it, instead of "assess". FML
Today, I found out that my ten-page paper, which has taken me two months to construct perfectly and is worth 30% of my grade, was on the wrong book. It’s due tomorrow. FML
Today, I was excited to hear that I received three of my grad school recommendations in the mail from a very busy professor. They need to be submitted sealed, and of course, my nosy mom decided to open them. FML
Feel like sharing it with the other FML users?

Laying it all on your advisor seems like a convenient way to gloss over the fact that your research was wildly deficient.

Have you juxtaposed that with shoes and ships and cabbages and kings? You might just have something there! Doesn’t research start first with a literature search to prevent disasters like this? Also, replicating earlier findings also have value in strengthening science.

I mean, you're the one who spent 7 years not realizing what your product does.

How did you not figure out what you were making after 7 years?

so you are saying your literature review was a tad incomplete?

If you had spent years of dedicated work towards your thesis, how did you not stumble upon it sooner? Seems kind of crappy for you to put this all on your advisor if you're the one trying to prove an already proven thesis.

"My discovery is going to be amazing!" "It's sealing wax." "But I've only just found it." "Yeah, sorry. It's been around for a few hundred years." "You could have told me!" "Hey, you're the one studying for a PhD. You're supposed to be smart."
