Today, after months of planning, my boyfriend told me he's changed his mind and doesn’t want to move with me to where I got a job. Why? He doesn’t want to live that far away from his mother. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, after a year of living with my boyfriend at our new place, he told me that he wants to sell our house and live in a trailer, so he can be closer to his mom. FML
Bad sign
Today, my 24 year-old boyfriend said that he wanted to move out of our apartment, but also stay in a relationship. He's moving back in with his parents, over two hours away. FML.
Today, my boyfriend told me that we wouldn't move in together as we had planned to do for a long time. His mother forbade it. He is 27. FML
Today, my boyfriend of 3 months broke up with me because he is moving. He's only moving 20 minutes away. FML
Close, but no cigar
Today, my long-distance boyfriend of 3 years uttered the heartbreaking words, “I met this girl here in my hometown and she’s really great and we fell in love with each other, I can’t do this anymore. We’re over.” I was planning on moving to his town after graduation this year. FML
Today, I moved three hours away from my boyfriend for college. Even though he got accepted to the same school and had a job lined up in town, he decided not to come with me because the Internet at our apartment wasn't going to be fast enough for his gaming. FML
Long distance
Today, my long-distance boyfriend decided to tell me he found a girl in his hometown he’s become attracted to, and that he doesn’t love me anymore. He says we can "still be friends." I’d just driven 100 miles to see him. FML
Under pressure
Today, I told my boyfriend of nearly a year that I finally told my mother about him, and that she wants us to fly out so he can meet her. He said “OK” with a blank expression. I went to work, and when I got home, he and all his stuff were gone. He left a note on the fridge, saying, “Sorry, I can’t do this anymore. All the best.” FML
Today, I learned that my 29-year-old boyfriend won't stay the night at my house because he lives at home with his parents and doesn't want to have "the discussion" with his mom about me. FML
Today, my boyfriend broke up with me, claiming moving in was a bad idea and he is the type who needs his privacy. It was his idea to move in, he had to convince me. Now we are stuck, under lease together for the next 6 months. FML

Wow, the amount of people who believe wanting to live near your family is a red flag is ridiculous. His partner is not the only person he’s allowed to care about. Though the waiting 8 months to tell you that? That’s ridiculous.

This. And OP also doesn't say how far they were planning on moving. There's a huge difference between 'an hour' (or a few hours) and 'other side of the country/thousands of miles' away. I agree he should have mentioned it earlier, but it's also possible that he thought he would be okay with the distance but as D-day arrive, he realized it's a huge issue for him.

Get a lawyer and fast, it sounds to me like he lied about his age when you met him.

I have the same problem with my fiancé. Mommas boys are hard to deal with.

That’s my feeling, too. If this was something important to him, he should have told her long ago.

It kinda is a red flag if he prefers to be closer to his mother than his partner. At some point you've gotta live on your own.

Except I really don't feel this is an 'either or' situation? Technically if you're living with someone you're living closer to them than someone else, but that doesn't mean you need to cut all ties with your parents and move outside visiting distance.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to live close to your family but it sounds like the boyfriend is just using that as an excuse because he's having cold feet about moving. It's not like they planned this a week ago. To give him the benefit of the doubt though: there is also the possibility that his mother's circumstances changed recently (health issues, etc) and that she needs support.

We have multiple ways to travel. I moved states away when I was 17. I still saw my family plenty. But uprooting your entire life for your partner’s job is tough. And sometimes people chicken out. People get scared about losing the familiar support, like Mom. I hope he had a last minute change of mind and didn’t just hold off on saying something. And if it’s just cold feet, he may follow soon after.

Consider yourself fortunate to have found out before you started living together. Now you can move on to a new job, new place, AND a new boyfriend.

You only have one mom, but you find girlfriends and jobs anywhere. You need to find a job closer to his mom.
