The next time you see him you should ask if you can have a chat. I work with people who have intellectual disabilities and unfortunately most have grown up without proper guidance or acceptance about their sexuality. You need to be gentle, yet firm. You can let him know how much you appreciate his friendship, but there is a time and a place for masturbation and that means somewhere private. Let him know this makes you feel uncomfortable and you would like them to stop doing it at your work. Encourage it to be at home and in private. Please don't tell them it's gross, nasty, disgusting, unnatural, etc. They can lack social awareness around this, and not know it makes people feel unsafe. Let them know you would still like to see them/receive hugs, but they need to respect your boundaries and place of work. Hope this helps!

I'm not saying it's right, but if no one has taught him that it's not socially acceptable to ********** in public areas, how is he supposed to know? Social norms are learned behaviors, not natural. It's good he is going somewhere private but someone needs to step in and teach him that isn't enough. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's gross or disturbing, it's simply inappropriate and something that can be corrected fairly simply by letting a caretaker know. I have seen mentally sound people do things that go more into the disturbing/creepy category than this. And this is assuming that the person that told her about it is even telling the truth.

They're a person and therefore can be talked directly to. You do not need to go around them and talk to their guardian. Doing so implies they aren't smart enough to communicate and understand what is being expressed. People with intellectual disabilities are much smarter than people give them credit for. You'd be surprised how well they understand their surroundings and other people. Don't underestimate their ability to comprehend. They just need time to process, and a person to take their time in explaining themselves.
