Today, my sister told me about her upcoming trip to Mexico. I asked her how she was going to do anything without knowing any Spanish. She told me she's "just going to read their lips". FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I watched a movie with my little sister. I couldn't understand a word that was said during one scene, but I figured it was in some kind of made-up language. When I commented on it later, she called me a moron and said it was Spanish. FML
It's close enough
Today, after many hours studying a complete course of Spanish, I felt really good. I had accomplished something, something I could really use next week when I fly to Mexico on vacation. Then I found out what I had learned was Spanish as they speak it in Spain, not how they speak it in Latin America. FML
Today, I was at a mall. A woman stopped by me, said slowly and loudly, in Spanish "baño?" Knowing a bit of Spanish, I nodded and pointed the restrooms out for her. She then mutters about "dang Mexicans and their inability to speak English". I'm not even Latina. I'm Irish-American. FML
No comprendo
Today, I got lost in a foreign city while on vacation and couldn't communicate with anyone, because I didn't speak the language and no one seemed to be able, or even wanted, to speak to me in mine. FML
References
Today, I was talking to a smokin' hot Cuban sorority girl. She told me her mom only speaks Spanish, so she translates for her. Without thinking I said, "Oh like Chewbacca and Han Solo?" FML
Today, my sister introduced me to her new, deaf boyfriend. She proudly proclaimed that she was trying to learn sign language for his sake, so he wouldn't have to read her lips. I'm also deaf and have been trying to get her to do the same for me for 20 goddamn years. FML
Foiled
Today, I was at the airport, when a lady came up and loudly asked if she could sit next to me. I have serious social issues, so to avoid having to talk to her, I pretended I was deaf and couldn't hear her. She immediately broke out her sign language skills. FML
Truth bomb
Today, I showed up at my boyfriend's work to surprise him by speaking in Spanish, his first language. I've been taking classes secretly. He smiled, kissed me, and then finished telling his friend, in Spanish, that I'm boring and ugly but he's got nothing better going on. FML
Today, while on a vacation, I tried to step out of myself and flirt with this boy who I thought was cute. He was going along with it and nodding so I thought it was working. Then he opened his mouth and I realized he didn't speak English. FML
Today, I checked in a group of men from Mexico. I speak just enough Spanish to realize they're discussing my breasts. I have to stand there smiling while checking in three more people. FML

I would love to see her followed with a hidden film crew to document this.

Yeah, she's going to Mexico. Idiot.

How do you know the sister isn't a college graduate and was just using some humour?
Pleonasm 36
When did this "going places" thing become so overused and misapplied?

@12 How do we know? Well, perhaps since the sibling posted this on fml?
zarosian 17
Since people started making witty comments and getting thumbed up.

You know, if you stopped after that first sentence, this comment might not have been so terrible.

Most people speak English when at a resorts in Mexico so why would you think she needs to know Spanish...
AnnaDeWitt 27
When did OP say she was going to a resort? And knowing some of the native tongue is always helpful when traveling.

If you go to any country that does not speak your language it is polite to at least learn the essential phrases. I would personally Learn as much as I could before travelling and then use my time there to learn about the culture, language, and cuisine. There is no reason to travel to anywhere unless the you want to learn about it. People shouldn't travel just to see pretty things it should broaden their understanding of the world, or at least thats my opinion.

#25 is my hero. And I agree completely. It should be a learning experience, an expansion of the mind.

I completely agree with 25 . Try an blend with the culture and learn the basics if possible, but I have been in the position where I had no idea how to speak the language but made it through other means of communication. Pointing, gestures , facial expression , et, but this was in medical emergencies where planning ahead of time wasn't an option.

That's hilarious xD How does she think she can manage to read their lips when Spanish words are coming out of them?

Good luck with that one

everybody knows how to speak English
Ambrily 27
Maybe in Mexico, but I can assure you that the same isn't true here in Italy, where not only few people know how to speak a foreign language, but many have serious difficulties even with Italian. I'm not joking, even if I'd like to.
keiNan_fml 35
discussion is about mexico not Italy right now.

#23 (#5) Having just spent a crazy three weeks in Mexico I can assure you that no not everybody knows how to speak English in Mexico, far from it. I was very grateful for my basic Spanish skills more than once.
Gaernem 17
That's not true. I live in Florida and half the people I come in contact with here don't even speak English.
bombielol 20
well let's how that works out for her (:
itwontvalidate 18
you're both not that clever, you dont need to speak the language just for a trip, English will do.
DoubleDosexo 12
People speak Spanish in Mexico, not English.
ilovemsminaj 13
A lot of people know English so she should be fine. There has to be at least someone who can help her out
wanted_2_want 40
Yup, specially if she's an attractive woman. LOL

Get her a phase book. That's what my dad did when my family took family trips to Spain.
