Today, my girlfriend's dad called to say she wasn't allowed to come with me on a three-day trip on New Year's. He waited until Christmas to say it, even though we booked and paid for the trip nearly a month ago. Now he ruined both holidays. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
No way
Today, my sister and I were planning a trip to get away from things and visit some faraway friends. My dad then decided to insert himself into our plans. He got mad when we said no, and couldn't understand why we wanted to go by ourselves. FML
Xmas stress
Today, besides the fact that I hate Christmas since my parents divorced, my mom told me she can't come this year with my sister because of no money. We even offered to pay for their tickets, but she won't come because of the "last minute" stress. Fuck this year. FML
I mean, come on…
Today, a friend is refusing to pay her final portion on the vacation we’ve been planning for over a year. She's met a new guy and he’s uncomfortable with her going on a girls' trip. We’ve been planning this trip longer than she’s known him and it’s too close to the date for us to get a full refund. FML
Narcissism in a nutshell
Today, my boyfriend's family offered me the trip of a lifetime visiting their families overseas. My mother threw a tantrum, telling me that it was my fault that she was never able to travel, it was my fault that she got pregnant with me and had to marry my abusive father. FML
The cat's out of the bag
Today, my partner's mother and I had been planning a little surprise get-together for his birthday. A surprise weeks in the making was ruined by my dad asking, "Aren't you supposed to be going to (his parent's town name) this afternoon?" in front of him. Thanks dad. FML
Today, I flew my wife, myself and three kids to pay a surprise visit to my parents who were going to be alone for Christmas. When we arrived, we found out they decided to go on vacation. We have nowhere to go. FML
Today, my girlfriend bought two tickets for a cruise to the Bahamas. Too bad the second ticket isn't for me. I guess her ex-boyfriend will have a wonderful time with her. FML
Today, I told my future MIL that we couldn't see her on Christmas because I have to work that day passing out gifts to elderly patients, but that I would call off work to travel to see her any day after. That isn't good enough, so she asked my fiance to spend Christmas without me. FML
Today, my parents refused to give my daughter her Christmas presents as an act of revenge against her father. FML
Today, I found out I have to give my father-in-law back the football tickets he gave me for my birthday. Why? His girlfriend decided she wanted to go. He didn't get me a different gift. FML

If you're old enough to take a holiday alone together in the first place, then I assume you two are old enough consenting adults, so just ignore the dad and go ahead with the trip. Your relationship is your business only - other people can join you in on the fun if you let them, but they have no right to dismantle or obstruct it.

Well if you are over 18 he can't really tell her what to do.

...Merry Christmas...?

Some people seem confused, but I think this fml makes sense. If you are 17 or 18, you are at an age where you might have a job and be responsible enough to plan and pay for a trip, but as long as you live under your parents' roof, you still have to follow their rules. Just because you are legally an adult doesn't exempt you from following the rules of the household.

Call me crazy but the "rules of the household" shouldn't apply when you're not AT the household.

you're crazy

Yea but OP's girlfriend's dad should have told his daughter no before they booked the trip, if he knew about it beforehand.

OP, please give us a follow up. I need to know how old you are

If you two are old enough to book and pay for your own holidays, you're old enough to tell him to get bent.

listen to your heart not her dad...

Take her, anyway. You're old enough to pay for a vacation with your own money, certainly she can cut the cord now, if not soon.

Wait for a response before booking YDI.

"He waited until Christmas to say it" - this formulation strongly implies that he was well aware of their plans and probably even gave his consent, only to retract it later. You shouldn't just assume OP and his gf booked this trip behind her father's back, especially when everything points in the other direction.

Defy him and enjoy life. You only live once.

Don't let him run your life.

Shouldn't have bought the tickets if her dad didn't give an answer
