Today, my friend and I were in her mom's car talking about which job was harder: actor or artist. I said, "Art is easy. You just scribble on a piece of paper and call it abstract art." Her mom squinted at me in the rear-view mirror and my friend stopped talking. Then she said, "My mom is an artist." FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I finished a big art project. It was a self-portrait done in acrylics. Proud of my piece, I showed my mom. After some thought her first comment was, "well, I'm either going to insult your art or your face." FML
Today, my mother yelled at me for not doing all of my homework. She got so mad, she tore up a drawing I'd spent over a week working on. That was my art homework. FML
Confused
Today, I was interviewing a woman for a job. She told me that she may need days off because of her artistic son. I jokingly replied, "Does he color on the walls or something?" She then stared at me with a weird look on her face. Autistic, her son is autistic. FML
Today, I was partnered up with a girl in my art class, since the teacher had asked us to take turns drawing portraits of each other. I went first and felt pretty proud of how the drawing turned out. I showed it to her and she said "That's OK. I'm not good at drawing either." FML
VADE RETRO SATANAS
Today, I found out that my mom paints, and that I was artistically represented in a painting, as Satan, in a painting made shortly after I told her that I was an atheist. FML
Today, I learned how artistically talented my daughter is. Unfortunately, her favorite medium to work in is poo. FML
Today, I was talking to an art critic at an exhibition. He told me that the artist had no talent and went on to tell me everything wrong with each painting. I'd painted them all. FML
Follow your dreams
Today, despite me being a master-level carpenter, and my art sells for thousands, I heard my mom telling her snobby friends how embarrassed she is of me because I’m “basically unemployed” and waste my time on “hobby crafts” like a teenage nerd instead of getting “a real job” and finding a wife. FML
Leg day
Today, a friend asked me to come with her to the art building at school so I could pose in the stance of a figure she was drawing for her exam. I obliged and sat for the pose. When the art teacher walked by, she looked at me, then at the sketch, pointed to the legs, and said, "Make them fatter". FML
Today, I looked over my next homework assignment for art class. It was to draw a portrait of my best friend. I can't think of anyone besides my mother. FML

well youre an idiot because art is much more complicated ... ... I can't draw for my life nor can I pass it off like I can ... meanwhile people will see a movie with jessica Simpson and call that "acting" ... it ain't hard

...honestly? Comparing actors and artists is like comparing apples and pears. Done well, each require talent and effort.

You deserved it, but her mom also deserved your comment.

THANK YOU I'm glad there are other people who share this opinion. I don't understand how some art makes it into museums and becomes so valuable. Especially when people attach such a deep meaning to something a 3 year old could have randomly done. And minimalist stuff too. Basically doing as little to something as possible. Or sticking a dot on a white canvas. OMG I'M A FREAKING ARTIST BECAUSE I DID THIS OMG

You deserve it! I am an artist and while I do not appreciate abstract one bit, art as a whole isn't "easy". I do agree that abstract art looks like scribbles and that a 5 year old can do it so you're right there.

It's cute how people are wirting essays about this... It's really quite simple: ABSTRACT art is, of course, bullshit. They spend more time on their artists' statements than their actual work. Real art can be anything- it's a wide spectrum, but generally anything thats not some lines and dots on a canvas requires skill. It's incredibly debateable, and trying to fix definition to anything is stupid. You'll never win. YDI for insensitivity, but you couldn't have known and that must be embarrassing as hell...

As an actor and artist, I must say, you're an asshole who deserves it and both are ******* HARD, some easier than others depending on what you do. Community theatre is going to be easier than broadway, and sketching harder than a landscape, but they're all HARD IN THEIR OWN WAYS.

OP: we all shoot our mouth off sometimes, you know what you said was tactless, learn from it and move on :) everyone debating whether being an artist or an actor is "harder": that is a ridiculous point to debate, first because they're both "artists" and secondly because it's like comparing apples to oranges. like #131 said "hard in their own ways"

You f*** of a douche! do u realize how hard it is to paint and draw and be able to sell your art with the thousands of other artists out there doing the same? wtf?! especially since artwork is really just a luxury and not a necessity, even fewer people are willing to spend the amount just for the supplies, especially in this messed up economy. I may not know much about acting but its also gotta b hard considering how many people actually make it for their talents and not their relations or appearance -cough- miley cyrus -cough-
