Today, my dad had something to tell me. He'd cleaned out my bank account to pay off 38,000 dollars worth of gambling debt. My wedding is in 5 months. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, my dad came home from Vegas. Today, my college savings account is down by $64,000. FML
Heist
Today, my father stole the money I'd saved up by working and spent it all gambling. I'd saved it up for a year for a new car. FML

Today, the bank called saying we were late in the mortgage payments. I was puzzled because three months ago I issued a big cheque to my mum pay off the mortgage. I just discovered that she instead lost it all at the casino. Turns out, she's become a compulsive gambler ever since dad passed away. FML
Today, I found out that my parents are 28,000 dollars in debt and that my bank account has $27.17 in it. They took my money to help pay their debt. FML
Today, my sister finally broke down and told me that our dad gambled away of all my college savings, and I would have to pay for school the best way I can. They have known for months, and when I asked why nobody told me, the reply was, "You're a college boy, we thought you would figure it out." FML
Today, I found out that my dad has been trying to take money out of my savings account to pay for divorce fees and a hammock. FML
Today, my mom cleaned out my bank account, saying my "no-good dad" owes her child support and that she'll get it one way or another. FML
Today, I finally told my dad that he owes me over 400 dollars, and that I need it or else I'd get kicked out of my apartment. He only gave me 70 and said to get a better job. FML
Today, my dad screamed at me because I've been "spending too much money". He's been out of a job for 4 months and I've been giving him 300 dollars a month to help pay for bills... and his beer. FML
Today, my dad asked to borrow some money off me, so I said okay. Later on, he told me he'll be using it to help divorce my mom. I pretty much just helped pay for my parents' divorce. FML

I second what #1 said - how come your dad has access to your account? If you're an adult, I thought you automatically became the main person in charge of the account and no one else could access it. Unless he stole your credit card or something? Either way, FYL for sure

Smart move, Dad! He was going to have more fun gambling the $38,000 than he was going to have at your stupid, gaudy, tasteless wedding. Now, here's a smart move for you, kid: 1) Buy an expensive life insurance policy on your dad, 2) Make it look like an accident.

If you are grown up enough to get married then you should also be grown up enough to have your own bank account. Regardless of if the account was opened when you were a minor or not when you turned 18 you should have either opened your own and transferred the money OR took his name off. YDI all the way for overlooking that.

How can most people not realize that the bank does not automatically take your parents' names off when you turn 18? Do all of you really grow up with no interest in your OWN MONEY whatsoever? I know that as soon as I started making money at age 16, I became VERY concerned about other peoples' names on my account and watched it like a hawk (and I have no reason not to trust my parents, either). As soon as I turned 18 I went to the bank with my parents and got their names taken off the account (or if your parents don't want to, you take all the money out and open a new account with it under your name). By the time I was 18 I had thousands of dollars saved up and I didn't want anyone touching that but me, that's for sure!

I was always able to gain access to my account with just my ssn and my birthday when I first opened my bank account because I could never remember my account number. My parents know both of those things. Actually most parents know both of those things. So, it's quite possible that he was able access the account that way.

I know how you feel. I had to give up a 40,000/yr tier one school for the same reason :(
