Today, it's my girlfriend's birthday. I presented her with an oil painting of her that I'd been working on for over a month, and she started to cry. I thought it was because she liked it, until she asked if she really looks that ugly and disproportionate in real life. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I spent the whole night and day painting a portrait of my girlfriend. Being proud of it, I sent it to her hoping she would appreciate it. I spent hours working on that picture only for her to reply with, "That's not me, is it?" FML
Today, I finally handed my girlfriend a portrait of her. I'm not the best drawer, but I spent weeks on it and I thought it turned out pretty good. When she looked at it, she asked what kind of dog was it. FML
Today, I finished a big art project. It was a self-portrait done in acrylics. Proud of my piece, I showed my mom. After some thought her first comment was, "well, I'm either going to insult your art or your face." FML
Today, my girlfriends and I got a caricature painting while on a trip in the city. Unfortunately for me, the part of my appearance that the artist decided to exaggerate was my acne. FML
Today, as my friend was rudely rummaging through my phone, she saw a picture of the pottery I've painted her for Christmas. Not only did she see it, but she also declared it ugly. That's probably the present I'm the most proud of this Christmas. FML
Today, I was partnered up with a girl in my art class, since the teacher had asked us to take turns drawing portraits of each other. I went first and felt pretty proud of how the drawing turned out. I showed it to her and she said "That's OK. I'm not good at drawing either." FML
Today, my roommate asked for my opinion of her new painting. The same painting I hand-painted for over ten hours. She apparently thought it was a gift. She won't give it back. FML
Today, I took my girlfriend to a beginners’ painting class. She and everyone else was able to produce a painting significantly better than mine, and I got laughed at for my lack of skill. I’ve been painting for twenty-five years. FML
Today, we were drawing self-portraits in school. I'm horrible at art, so I turned to the person next to me and stated that mine looked really ugly. He replied saying, "No, it looks exactly like you." FML
Today, I finally exchanged pictures with the woman I've been seeing online for some time now. She replied, saying "Thats not funny. Some people actually look like that." I sent my real picture, and thought I actually looked pretty good in it. FML

YDI, Thats why you should never give something you made yourself to women (other then your mother when still in primary school) they won't appreciate the effort. It will either be too ugly, or even when it is beautiful, you are too cheap to buy a real present. There is no winning. Especially when she gives you something she made, no matter how crap or horrible it is you are mandated to like it above all else or no sex for the next 2 months.

Have you ever been around a woman other than your mother? My girlfriend personally loves homemade gifts. I feel unthoughtful if I don't put a lot of time into a gift. She painted me a picture - not of me, but relevant to my being a musician - and I absolutely love it. Anyone can drop some cash on a gift, but putting your time into it; that means something.

My boyfriend loves to receive and give personal and homemade gifts. He's a photographer, and I personally think it's amazing he will take pictures of me that I think are horribly unflattering because he thinks they're beautiful. Then he spends several hours getting the colors and contrast just the way he wants. Watching him pour over getting things like my eyes just right always makes my heart smile.
