Today, I went to see my guidance counselor. I was supposed to hear from my college about a scholarship by October 3rd. I was worried since it was already the 2nd so I went to talk to her. She never turned in my nomination. Goodbye $80,000 scholarship. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was supposed to hear back from a major scholarship competition. After months of waiting, during which my parents were convinced I had won, I discovered that my entry had never been received. Apparently the woman I had confirmed with had had a long day, and lied so that she could go home. FML
Today, I got an email from a Scholarship Program reminding me that they had rejected me 3 months ago. Thanks for reminding me I might not make it to college. FML
Today, my parents gave me a letter they'd forgotten about since late last year. In it was a $30,000 scholarship to a local master's program with an application due date of two weeks ago. FML
Today, my high school guidance counselor tried to convince me NOT to go to college, mainly because it's been so long since someone from my high school went to college, that she got rid of all the college information she used to have. FML
Bad times
Today, I got an email stating that my scholarship request was denied, 51 days after applying with no response. I'm now forced to drop-out from my college degree because I ran out of money, and I've been unsuccessful at finding a job for two years either, thanks to Covid. FML
Today, I spent ages applying for a scholarship online. I found out on the very last page that I do not meet the qualifications for it. FML
Today, I found out that I owe my college a little over $10,000. Why? Because, due to a slight misspelling of my name, the scholarship that I have been going insane trying to meet the requirements for is not actually giving me any funding. FML
Can't afford this shit
Today, I was cleaning my father's study room and wondering why I did not receive my acceptance/rejection letter from a college I really wanted. I found the acceptance letter, on his desk, also approving of a full scholarship. The deadline to confirm was a month ago. FML
Today, I called the college of my dreams to check the status of my application. Turns out they "never received" copies of my transcripts. They did however cash the $70 application fee that was mailed with them. FML
Today, I got into my dream university. I also got turned down for the scholarship and the loan that would enable me to actually go. FML

Move to Australia, you hardly have to pay for college here.

You should have kept checking with her and reminding her. In my experience, just because someone tells you they'll do something doesn't mean they'll do it. People get too busy, or they forget, or they don't care enough, or whatever. If you want someone else to do something for you, you have to be pro-active and make sure it happens instead of just assuming it'll get done otherwise you're going to be let down.

This happened quite a few times at my high school. One year, the guidance counselor, who took everyone's applications for college (to look them over) never mailed them out. A handful of people who were applying to some really great schools had to settle for community college. After she was fired, she started her own business, which to my knowledge, never took off. Maybe she moved to NC cuz it sounds like the same person!

I really hope this can be turned around for you. Definitely still pursue the scholarship, you might still get it, especially with the kick-ass reference your guidance counselor will write for you to make up for this...

That really does suck OP. :( But at least there are other scholarships you can apply to. Talk to your principal and ask him/her to talk to the board of directors about this guidance councilor. Contact the people for the 80,000 dollar scholarship and let them know what happened and see if they will accept it late because of the circumstances. If they wont, keep applying for other scholarships. I'm a big believer that positive thinking can really help a person so focus on the fact that 1) you can prevent this person from doing this to any other students and 2) that there is still hope of financial aid for you. :) I never got any grants/scholarships when I was in high school. Starting college, I needed something and I asked my college if I could fax them my financial aid paperwork; they said yes. I did, then called to confirm they got it. They read part of it to me as confirmation. I never heard back from them. I kept calling but the phone would eventually switch to an answering machine and I'd never get any calls back. Finally, months later, 4 weeks into the semester I get a paper in the mail from them saying they never received my paperwork. I immediate refilled it and tried to turn it in, in person, to them. They told me it was "too late in teh semester and they were no longer reviewing financial aid." Because I have no way to confirm that I had sent in my paperwork on time, I'm screwed, and I owe my uncle a ton of money, but he understands the situation and gave me plenty of time to pay him back.

I'm sorry for you :( I have practically the same thing happen to me. except I think our school councilor did stuff like that on purpose. She even told several of my friends that their is no reason at all to take the SATs and it is a complete waste of money, the scholarship I ended up getting was based on my SATs

I'm going to defend Op merely because I have been there. Op MIGHT have checked in with the guidance councilor and been told "yeah its in" or some other line. Then just to double check she might have gone to see the councilor and been like "oh, just wanted to make sure it was in." The councilor then could have told her the truth, "Sorry I forgot." It does not mean the Op did not follow through or check. IF she thought she was going to get the scholarship then this is a terrible blow. Even if she didn't get it, the fact that she doesn't even stand a chance for it must be the thing haunting her.

While it sucks, and my own high school experience taught me counselors answer to Satan, you should have checked up on it more. If you know it's due October 3, October 2 shouldn't be the first time you check on it. At the latest, September 25 should have been the first so there'd still be a week to get it in. But hey, everything happens for a reason. You now learned why it's important to follow up on things and be persistent about it. You're still in high school, sometimes you need to learn these things. But it should never happen again. And I'm only assuming that you didn't follow up because of the way the original post was worded, that you didn't get worried until October 2nd. If you did and this still happened, then you at least still learn the higher the stakes, the more persistent you need to be.
