Today, I found out that I owe my college a little over $10,000. Why? Because, due to a slight misspelling of my name, the scholarship that I have been going insane trying to meet the requirements for is not actually giving me any funding. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Give it back
Today, I checked my university financial account to discover I owed them over $1000. The reason? They had apparently given me too much money when I applied for a loan and now want it back. Oh, and I spent my loan money on books and a laptop for school. FML
Today, I found out that I've been paying student fees for the wrong account. Apparently I have been paying for some other student's tuition. FML
Today, I found out that I owed my school $0.20. They decided to charge me a late fee of $20 for deferring the intial payment. FML
Today, I was put on academic suspension only to find out my professor entered my grade wrong. I lost my financial aid and have to explain to my parents why I’m not in college anymore. FML
Today, I found out my school's financial aid had a "misunderstanding" of my finances, I can no longer afford to pay half of my bills or pay for Christmas. FML
Today, I found out that I was never actually enrolled in the class I've been attending all semester. I guess that explains why I only got $400 dollars in student aid, not the 1,200 they said I'd get. FML
Today, I applied for college graduation. Turns out my advisor screwed me over and now I'm 1 credit hour short of getting my degree. Now I have to wait another semester and pay $3,500 just to take a one hour class on Bowling so that I can graduate. FML
Today, my parents gave me a letter they'd forgotten about since late last year. In it was a $30,000 scholarship to a local master's program with an application due date of two weeks ago. FML
Today, I owe about $18,000 for a useless degree. Why? I graduated in 2016 from the ITT Technical Institute, a few months before the school shut down for good. The kicker? They misspelled my name on the diploma. FML
Today, I spent ages applying for a scholarship online. I found out on the very last page that I do not meet the qualifications for it. FML

Was that your mistake or the Colleges? Because if it was theirs they certainly shouldn't penalise you for it!

Educate your college. It's unacceptable for them to penalize you for minor errors such as name misspellings.

If you can't spell your name right, should they really be giving you a scholarship?

That's not what he said. My last name ends in en but the more common spelling of that name is on. This could easily happen to me as week and has me worried.

Thanks for killing my great joke, you buzzkill. It's not clear who misspelled his name, but it's funny to think it is him.

It was not a great joke, it wasn't even immediately obvious that it was joke at all. Try harder next time.

Nah, that was a pretty bad joke. It didn't even seem like a joke at all, just someone laying blame based on assumptions.

Dude your joke is terrible, are you retarded? Stop acting like an idiot and maybe someone will actually decide not to hate you.

shouldnt, but they'll do anything to not have to pay. colleges and universities constantly kick people off courses mid-year if they think they'll fail just so their 'pass rates' arent affected, so they're dodgy enough to do something like refuse to pay for a scolarship

On contrary if op can't properly spell his/her own name do they deserve the scholarship. (This only applies if the op was at fault.)

#11, even if it was the OP's fault misspelling their name, it is not enough to just disqualify someone from receiving a scholarship. Unless there's some weird requirement of length of name or how many people they can have with that letter, then the college has no right if the person met all requirements. I still find it very hard to believe that OP misspelled their name, however, seeing as they've at least been spelling it for 18+ years. It could have just been an honest mistake when they filled out paperwork and the person who received it couldn't tell the difference between an "rn" and a "m"..... Or something

I had this happen. My name is Caitlin and someone in the system who distributes addresses to different colleges to try and get me to go to their school spelled my name as "Caltlin". It was actually kind of nice because I knew which offers were legitimate and which were just spam.

And to think, a lot of other countries actually pay students to go to college. Sorry OP, that really sucks. Good luck

There's gotta be a way to fix that. Don't take "no" for an answer. Take it to the dean if you have to, and if that doesn't work, take it to the news stations. Make that school realize their reputation--and thus, their funding--is at stake here. You've got nothing to lose but a whole lot of debt.

As someone applying for scholarships i feel your pain. It takes ages and meeting the strict requirements and deadlines is a pain! Losing your scholarship and suddenly finding out you owe the university a big large sum over a misspelling is outrageous especially if it was not your doing!
MoroseMoose 47
I hope you can get it fixed, OP. Try not to stress out too bad until then!

May be a bit drastic but you could change your name spelling to gain the scholarship? I know it would mean a lot of hassle and paperwork but to save 10G?
DanielleinDC 34
Hopefully you can correct the college on this, especially if it was their error.
Colon_Man 17
Pour_collage_kid. Don't students have ID numbers attached to them so that when the inevitable 'same name students' show up they can tell them apart? Seems like the scholarship would be attached to that.

Maybe the scholarship wasn't awarded because the (wrong) name didn't match the sutdent number, or something silly like that.
