Today, I went to open my store but corporate had changed the locks without notice. The store's being sold. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I closed the store on my own for the first time. As I was locking the front door, the key broke. Now half the key is stuck and the door is still unlocked. I have to stay until we open in the morning and I'm not getting paid for it. FML
Today, I locked myself out of my own shop. And I'm a locksmith. FML
Today, I opened my new clothing store. My only customer was my mom and the only reason she came in was to tell me that someone stole my sign. FML
Today, after closing down the gas station I work at, I went to unlock the door to the building. Turned out the lock broke and I was locked inside until my boss could get there to let me out. FML
Today, I got a phone call from my boss, who'd hired me after two months of waiting and begging for this position. A week into the job, the company is closing our store. FML
Meritocracy ain't shit
Today, I was a manager of a store for 12 years and I'd had an agreement with the owner that I was to be signed over as full manager until I could buy the store… and then he goes to sell it to a kid I'd fired. I got fired. FML
Unfair dismissal
Today, I got fired from my new job. It was the start of my third week, and I got fired for not opening the store. The manager forgot to give me keys to open the store, and was two hours late. FML
Today, at the job I've had for eight years, I finally got the raise I was supposed to get a year ago. One hour later I found out the store was closing and we were all out of a job in two weeks. FML
Today, the store I work at got shut down and I got let go. Three days ago I got a promotion and a raise. FML
Today, I got a badly-needed job at a local discount store. After being hired, I found out I'm to help with the soon-to-begin store closing sale, and I'll be jobless again after 3 months. FML

That is a pretty standard operating procedure. They don't tell anybody because they're afraid everything will be stolen.

What if you keep personal effects in the store, like oh, a cellphone charger at your desk? When I worked at Macy's I had a locker for my purse.

You try to get ahold of them. As I said they're not required to give notice, and many places never do. One day they just lock up and never reopened. If you work for Macy's you should expect that to happen soon.

don't they have to give you notice? people at toys r us had notice that they're not holding the job after a set time.

Nope. in the US they are not required to let you know. Many places, especially restaurants, are just locked up and closed. The only reason toys r us let people know if they had a lot of inventory they had to liquidate.

Umm I'm pretty sure that's illegal they have to allow you to remove personal effects
