Today, I went out to eat with a friend. I was supposed to be paying, but when I tried to, there wasn't enough money in my bank account. She didn't have money with her either. FML
Today, my friend and I went to a really expensive restaurant. We got really bad service, so halfway through the meal we decided to dine-and-dash. Turns out I left my purse in the restaurant. With my I.D. and everything inside. FML
Today, I got into a heated argument at a restaurant with a guy I am seeing because he refused to let me pay for the bill and I thought it was sexist. When he finally agreed, I gave the waiter my card, only to have him return a minute later telling me it was declined. FML
Today, I was waiting in line while a lady paid for her shopping, when her credit card got declined. She started ranting and insulting everyone and kept insisting: "I'm not poor!" By the time the lady had finally stormed off, I had spittle on my face, and the cashier was almost in tears. FML
Today, after already having a terrible day, I went to Starbucks for an espresso. Being nice, I put the last dollar I had in my wallet in their tip jar. While paying for my drink, my card was denied for insufficient funds. The world hates me. FML
Today, I was dining out with friends. I saw a mom instructing her young child to go to empty tables and take whatever cash had been left. I discreetly told the manager. He confronted the woman and pointed right at me. As she was being thrown out, she tossed a very heavy mug at my head. It hit me. FML
Today, while paying for dinner, my card declined and my date immediately left. The waitress then ran my card again successfully. FML
Today, my horrible parents turned up to the restaurant I work at just to mess with me. Dad forgot his wallet, what a surprise, and asked me to pay the bill. I refused so my manager got involved. My dad got arrested, I got fired and might lose my lousy flat if I’m late on the rent. FML
Today, I overheard a waitress calling me a cheapskate because I left a $2 tip on a $9 tab. When I told her she was ungrateful, rude, and unprofessional, she burst into tears and told the manager I’d threatened her. I was then banned from the restaurant, all while the little twat smirked. FML
Today, I went out to eat with my friends. When the bill came, all three of them had "inconveniently" forgot their wallets at home. I ended up having to pay. It was a $178 check. FML

So this restaurant lets its staff tease and ridicule in this situation? After being treated like that, I'd be talking to the manager about making the meal free. It's embarrassing enough to get declined; the staff were just being dicks.

He might not even have no balance. I once tried to pay for something that was £10 when I had over £200 in my account. My card wouldn't work, and I had to borrow money from a friend.

Yea there's actually a bunch of reasons why your card might not work. They shut mine off without notifying me because of the whole Target Scam that happened. I went to buy lunch at school and my card wouldn't go through.

I agree that you should always check but sometime it will get denied for no reason. where I work it happen a lot and half the time it our machines. I have one lady who come in all the time if she swipes her card it gets denied but if we type in her number it works.

Sometimes, if you make multiple purchases after making a large one, the fraud detection alert will occur and your card will be denied until you call the credit card company.

Cards can fail on you in so many ways even if your balance is plentiful. My favorite one is if I make two separate purchases that are the same amount the second won't go through. Gets me every time.

#93 Debit cards also get called credit cards in the states. Debit cards are hooked up to your bank account, so you are spending your money.

Unprofessional, true, but if they can't pay then they're as good as deadweight to the restaurant in any case. If I realized I couldn't pay I would EXPECT to be teased about it (mind you, my town is a bit more laid back than most). They'd find a way to settle the bill one way or the other.

Agreed. I work in a grocery store and see people whose cards get declined or who forgot their wallets and can't pay multiple times a day. I would never laugh or embarrass them because aside from being unprofessional it would also be rude and unfair because these things happen to everyone at some point. I highly doubt that none of those servers ever got declined for something. (And yes, I know it's different in a restaurant, but still, no need to be assholes)
