Today, I was shopping at my workplace, out of uniform, with my husband. A customer recognised me and wanted me to serve him, but I couldn't since we can be fired for doing so while off-duty. He complained to my manager, who wasted no time publicly bitching me out. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
But…
Today, I went to my retail job to buy some clothing. As soon as I walked through the doors, my manager yelled at me for not being in appropriate work clothes. I tried to explain that I was off the clock but he was having none of it. I got written up. FML
Today, I went to Macy's to go shopping, I was wearing a shirt and tie and dressed nicely. Customers came up to me with questions, but I just ignored them. Minutes later, thinking I was an employee, the manager came and yelled at me, and threatened to fire me. FML
The customer is always a dong
Today, a customer filed a formal complaint with corporate about me, because I wouldn't help her find things she wanted while I was off the clock. We were in a completely different store than the one where I actually work. FML
Today, I was stopped in the grocery store by a stranger, who berated me, quite loudly, for going out in public in my pajamas. I had just gotten off work and was wearing scrubs. FML
What a freak
Today, a manager mistook me for an employee because I was wearing a shirt I bought from that shop. He was yelling at me for not working and tried to grab me to stop me leaving. I had to punch him in the nose to get free, and as I ran he actually shouted that I was fired. I’ve never worked there. FML
Customer relationships
Today, I assisted a customer at work. She was asking me all sorts of stupid questions and acting like an entitled, spoiled brat. When she left, since I had a mask on, I meant to mouth, "Stupid bitch" but I blurted it out loud. Everyone heard. I was fired. FML
Today, I got fired from my job. I caught a customer taking pictures up my skirt, and my boss fired me for calling the police and "making a big deal out of it". FML
Let it out
Today, I was working when I delivered the standard "Hello, how are you?" to a customer. He took the opportunity to tell me about his deceased wife, his estranged children, and his anal tearing. After a while, I tried to help someone else, and he complained to my manager. I was written up. FML
Today, at work, we had an extremely rude customer who started cussing at us, and my coworker started cussing back. I jumped on the register to quickly bring down the line, and apologized to everyone for the scene. A secret shopper was in the line and claimed that I was rude. I got written up. FML
Going pro
Today, I got yelled at by one of the managers at my store for tucking in my shirt in the crew room. She called it unprofessional and offensive. It was my first day. FML

So wait, the person who is in authority, and should know the rules complains that you follow the rules? I think we know who really needs firing here!

Really? I thought this FML was very polite a nice ass chewing is a great thing to get by your boss off the clock
AriettaX 15
sheesh, why would someonefire an employee for helping people and beimg genuine on and off the clock??
valalvax 13
Because if they didn't, the employee could file a complaint to the government and get them fined for them working without being paid
incoherentrmblr 22
I guess customers think workers don't have a life outside of their job...

Why the hell would you get fired for helping a customer off-duty?!?

Employers have to follow whatever state laws mandate for break schedules, lunch requirements, and limiting what an employee can't do off the clock. These are in place to protect the worker from being "encouraged" to work off the clock (without pay) or skip breaks to get something done sooner. Violations of these laws can have massive fines attached, which is why companies will begrudgingly be anal-retentive about such matters. At least, the ones that don't have managers/owners that care about the quality of life of their workers...

Hopefully you told your manager to politely suck it .
peceout 29
Well obliviously not since he or she bitched her out.
devildog562 33
Never to late to defend yourself. The customer and the manager are both vein extremely unreasonable, I know I personally would say something back. Not that I'd be right to do so .
peceout 29
Okay, you edited your comment.

Yea I'm watching football. Trying to process type and watch. I applaud your quick response .

How do you politely tell someone to suck it...? "Here's a popsicle."?
devildog562 33
I'm not sure I like your attitude towards me while I'm off duty. Please consider getting on both knees and suck it softly. Thank you for your time and understanding . I believe that's as nice as I could say it. Or like the student that was smoking a while ago. Suck my dick bitch is fairly effective . Rude, but effective.

Duh, follow Shawn and Gus' version: "Dear so and so, you are cordially invited to suck it."

She's off the clock. She very well could. Also, as her husband, I would've bitched her boss out for crossing a line like that right in front of me. And if he dared fire her, they would get sued BIG time!!

Please tell me they banned him.

call hr and on get employee relations on his/her ass!

That's dumb that the customer even requested that if you're obviously not on the clock if you're not in uniform.
Dr_Strange 4
I agree. The customer is being much more ridiculous then the manager in this situation. OP wasn't in uniform and honestly the customer sounds like a real ass-hat.
lemongrab 18
Your manager easily could have explained the situation or the customer, or just offered to help out the customer personally.
more4me 27
Exactly. Proof that the manager is a jerk.
supernerd95 17
both the manager and customer sounds like jerks..
Sunflower1919 19
"I'm not working at the moment, but let me just go and get someone for you who can help," is what I would have said.
supernerd95 17
Ya but it's written in the FML that they could be fired for doing that ! that's why she didn't serve him.
MidnaLink 35
It's not technically serving someone if she offered to get help from someone else.
supernerd95 17
oops sorry i misread your comment! i know entirely my fault. i read someone as something.. so didn't finish reading the whole FML.
garrett_8614 14
If I'm not working, I'm not going to go find someone to help you. That's something you do while at work
Khaleesi_26 30
Your manager should know the rules, (s)he is in no postition to bitch you out on your day off. I'd do somethng about that. FYL OP and sorry you had to go through that.
jthmtwin 16
Gotta say that sucks but, if it's not like a grocery store or something like that you could shop at a different place on your day off?
tymarie2012 31
Maybe op gets an employee discount at his/her work
