Today, I went to my retail job to buy some clothing. As soon as I walked through the doors, my manager yelled at me for not being in appropriate work clothes. I tried to explain that I was off the clock but he was having none of it. I got written up. FML

Today, I was shopping at my workplace, out of uniform, with my husband. A customer recognised me and wanted me to serve him, but I couldn't since we can be fired for doing so while off-duty. He complained to my manager, who wasted no time publicly bitching me out. FML
Today, I went to Macy's to go shopping, I was wearing a shirt and tie and dressed nicely. Customers came up to me with questions, but I just ignored them. Minutes later, thinking I was an employee, the manager came and yelled at me, and threatened to fire me. FML
Today, I arrived at work and was immediately given a disciplinary write-up for being two hours late for my shift. Apparently the manager had changed my schedule that morning and failed to tell me. FML
Today, I got written up by my line manager for being too friendly to customers. I work in retail, my job is to be friendly. FML
Today, I got yelled at by one of the managers at my store for tucking in my shirt in the crew room. She called it unprofessional and offensive. It was my first day. FML
Today, I got called into work on my day off. I ended up being written up for being 15 minutes late to a shift I didn't even have. FML
Today, I was kicked out of a job interview at a clothing store for "not dressing appropriately" for the occasion. I'd purchased my outfit from the same store just two days prior with my last $100. FML
Today, I was shopping at a store from which I had previously bought a shirt. The clerk accused me of trying to steal my own shirt and called security. They examined it and argued with me for so long I was late to work. FML
Today, my boss yelled at me for leaving on time. After months of management hounding us about our overtime, I get in trouble for doing what I was supposed to do. FML
Today, I had a job interview. I didn't have any clothes suitable for the interview, so I went to the store early and bought some there. After the interview, I went to return the clothes, because they were so expensive. The hiring manager saw me. FML

Yeah, I had a manager like that too. One day I had to work straight after school so I planned to change into work clothes when I got there. Manager yelled at me as soon as I walked in the door for not wearing appropriate clothing. Thankfully she did finally listen when I told her I was going to change, but obviously she never apologized. I agree with the brick idea, might knock them into being decent people, you never know :P

I would write on the "write up" that you were not on the clock at the time this happened.

Just because you don't sign the write up does not mean it will not go on your file. My coworker and I got written up for smoking once and he refused to sign it, but it still went on his file. I agree with 10, I'd probably write "IT'S MY DAY OFF" in big bold letters and go to HR.

Unfortunately you can. I had a problem with my manager at my last job and took it to HR. Since he'd been with the company for decades and had a great reputation (while I had only been working there for six months), she wouldn't believe he was hostile towards me and making the kitchen unsafe for me to work in. I left that job real fast.
