Today, I was rejected from the University of Washington. My dad has been a professor there for 30 years, and is on the board of admissions. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I got a large envelope from a college I applied to earlier. My mom, expecting big news, made my family gather round as I opened it. It ended up being a letter of rejection from not just that school, but all three campuses of the state college. FML
Today, I received my acceptance letter to one of the most prestigious universities in the US, as well as a nice scholarship. I was so proud of myself, I eagerly showed my dad, hoping he would shed a tear or two. His only words were, "Just get a job so you can get the hell out of my house." FML
Today, I received a rejection letter from a college that I'd applied to 6 years ago. FML
Today, I found out that my dad, thinking it was an advertisement, threw away a letter from the college I applied to. FML
Today, when taking a group picture with my closest friends, a passing parent congratulated us on getting into the same university for next year. She's wrong. They're all going to Cambridge, except for me. I was rejected. FML
Today, I got an offer to study at a good university. My father has been pushing me to apply for years, so I ecstatically broke the news. Instead of congratulating me, he just grunted and delivered the more important news that he's divorcing my mum. Moment ruined. FML
Today, I found out that I was denied for work study eligibility by my college. I went to my financial advisor to ask why. It wasn't my grades or attendance. Apparently my father makes too much money for me to get a job at the school. My dad was fired 3 months ago and has been out of work since. FML
Today, I got into my dream university. I also got turned down for the scholarship and the loan that would enable me to actually go. FML
Today, I got 3 different rejection letters mailed to me from the same college. FML
Today, I was walking with a friend to tell him how excited I was for college and even motivating him to apply for the same school, until I found out later that I got rejected. FML

That must be equally embarrassing for him.

Obviously you assumed you could just get in because your daddy works there and probably didn't try to do well in high school. Your loss.

You fail at life if you can't get into UW, it has a 65 percent acceptance rate. You must have terrible grades or will add no value to the campus. Sorry.

Good. You shouldn't be admitted based upon your father's success. Admission should be based on merit. So go read a book.

It's not your dad jobs to fast track you into Uni.

I agree with everyone else here - while in real life connections might play into whether or not someone gets admitted (or gets a promotion or status or anything), you should at least have the sense to recognize that if you don't get in even WITH those connections, you really need to shape up your act. On the bright side, 10 years down the road, if you make something of yourself, no one can say that you just got where you are because you come from a rich/influential family. Ultimately, this could benefit you - people will respect you more

Maybe you should have been smarter...

Your dad was in the right, here. It would be ridiculously ignorant for you to think he'd let you into the college, just because he's your dad

UW is so picky- grades alone wont always get you in and apparently family relations in the board wont either. and I really doubt any of the people who just told you to "be smarter" have achieved anything close to what you have academically. Hopefully you had a backup plan though...
