Today, I was babysitting, and the family dog was unable to move, so I had texted the mother about it. We put the small dog on the couch to make it comfortable while the mother was on her way to get the dog and take it to the vet. Turns out, we sat with a dead dog for about ten minutes. FML

Today, while house sitting for my mother and stepfather, their elderly dog passed away. They live in such a remote location, the closest open vet office is a 2 hour drive, and the local one opens in 10 hours. FML
Today, I was in the car for 8 hours driving home from North Carolina with my family. We brought my dog along and I was petting her for most of the ride. I thought she fell asleep, so I continued to play with her. She never woke up. I played with a dead dog for almost an hour and a half. FML
Today, I went to move my dog that had been napping in the middle of my bed for the last few hours, only to discover that he wasn't napping. He died. FML
Today, I thought it would be nice to take my obese dog for a walk, since she hasn't had one in a long time. She was doing great, until we were about a mile from our house. She plopped down on the ground and wouldn't move. Nobody was home so I had to carry her all the way back to our house. FML
Today, I was at my mom's when I suddenly doubled over in pain. It was so bad that I begging to be taken to the hospital, just when her dog started coughing. She immediately ran to her dog, asked if she was OK, saying that she hates to see anyone she loves in pain. I sat there hunched over in disbelief. FML
Today, I heard whimpering while I was in my bedroom. Thinking it was my parents doing something nasty, I let them do it and turned on my music. My parents came home from work and I realised they were never home. I went into the room and saw my dead dog laying on the floor. FML
Today, our dog became ill. My mom wasted no time attending her every needs and became very distressed. When I had appendicitis a few months ago, my mom told me to “sleep it off” and a friend had to take me to the hospital. She only called once to bitch at me for “doing this on purpose to make her feel bad.” FML
Today, my dog played dead just so I would leave him alone. FML
Today, while I was pet-sitting for my boyfriend's parents, one of their dogs killed one of their kittens. FML
Today, I decided to adopt a 11 year-old dog that had been in need of a home for several months. Two hours after I got him home, I discovered him dead in the backyard. FML

It could have not been moving, they put it on the couch to rest, and it died while the mum was on her way.

I was thinking it probably died after OP put it on the couch and the mother was on their way. It probably showed signs of life before being put on the couch and just couldn't move at the moment.

I agree. Any dead pet I’ve had, went stiff. You’d notice they were dead.

It's not like it was a decaying animal or anything, I see nothing wrong with sitting with recently deceased pets or trying to make them comfortable. And it's not like you knew. The real sad part here is that whatever child you were babysitting had to go through pretty much watching their pet die.

If the adult (or at least older kid) babysitter didn't realize, I doubt the kids did. It should be fairly easy to explain in a way that won't traumatized the kids.

At least it wasn't one of the kids you were babysitting. Though maybe, now the parents know your the harbinger of death, you won't be babysitting there again.

Don't be too hard on yourself, I've worked with physicians that couldn't recognize a dead patient. (FML) It can be a challenge.
