Today, I realized that having an open relationship isn't all that great, when my boyfriend hooked up with his ex and dumped me for her. FML

Same thing different taste

Today, I told my boyfriend about a friend-with-benefits that I had before him, and he dumped me because I’m still friends with that person, and I didn’t tell him about him right away. FML
Breaking!
Today, my boyfriend wanted my emotional support after his other girlfriend hit him with a phone charger when she found out he had two girlfriends. Yes folks, the open relationship thing was news for me, too. FML

A relationship is like a circle. When a circle is open, it's not a circle anymore.

Open relationships are like getting drunk on a Tuesday - it may seems like a strange idea at first, but then it starts to seem like a great idea, then it gets better and better and better until at the end it ******* sucks and you're left drooling and crying on the toilet.

I'm in open relationship, working and happy one for 10 years. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you OP. If you want tips or know how mine works, feel free to send message. Don't worry, you will find someone with whom it will work out :)

This is why I don't like open relationships. You're better off without him, if he dumps his ex and tries to get you back, I wouldn't be surprised. He's not worth your love or your time.

Did he have an open relationship with his 'ex' as well? You deserve someone who steps up and respects your feelings!

I don't mean to be that dick, but that's kind of why you shouldn't do open relationships. For the most part the biggest assholes are do them

No offense, but you knew that was a risk going in. You deserve it because you set yourself up for it. Sorry it happened, but it's a learning experience.

Open relationships can work, OP, and I'm sorry this didn't work out well for you. Think of it this way though, your boyfriend could have cheated on you with that ex, or left you for her without having cheated on you. Things like that happen all the time in monogamous relationships, therefore it isn't being closed or open that causes these things to happen. Married men leave their 30+ marriages for hot 19 year olds. This crap happens. It hurts, and you deserve sympathy, but it isn't the fault of the lifestyle itself.

Yep, exactly - monogamous relationships are fallible too, & people undertake them without being judged & blamed for others' actions. If OP's partner left her for the same reason & their relationship was monogamous, the comment section would be an outpouring of support & sympathy. Instead, you all cast judgement from your limited, close-minded perspectives & blame her instead. It's kinda sad, really...

An analogy to explain why we sympathize with monogamous people who are cheated on, and not people like the OP: If OP was walking down the sidewalk, and got hit by a car, I'd be sorry for her. She was hit by someone else, through no fault of her own. Whereas if she was dancing in the street and got hit by a car, I'd have to say she brought that on herself. She knows cars drive on the street, and she put herself in their path. It's about setting yourself up. OP gave her boyfriend permission to sleep with other girls. He had a license to cheat. Don't play in traffic, and then look for sympathy when you get run over.

To me, an "open relationship" isn't really a "relationship" it's more like "friends with benefits" in which you can have both your heart broken & catch something incurable...kind of like playing Russian Roulette with a revolver that has three loaded chambers & three empty ones...sooner or later your bound to hurt/kill yourself with a 50-50 chance of doing so & the odds aren't exactly in anyone's favor.

Came to the comments section expecting to see massive closed-mindedness, ignorance and idiocy regarding polyamory, was not disappointed.
