Today, I learned the hard way that if you tell your child that they're old enough to cook their own food in the microwave, you have to make sure they're smart enough not to put the metal spoon in with the food as well. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, after getting home from work late last night and feeling lazy, I'd put my leftover dinner in the microwave, spoon and all. I wake up to find one of the kids started the microwave and it blew up because of the metal spoon. FML
Today, I had to explain very slowly to my mum why she cannot put metal cutlery in the microwave. She did it anyway. FML
Today, one of the kids I was babysitting tried to hard boil eggs using the microwave. You cannot hard boil eggs using the microwave. It makes a mess. This we have learned. FML
Can't feel my tongue
Today, I was using the same metal spoon to stir boiling noodles and the pasta sauce I was heating up. I decided to taste the sauce and see if it was getting warm, forgetting that the spoon was sitting in boiling water three seconds earlier. FML
Fireworks
Today, I tried to warm soup in a travel mug. I forgot to take the metal spoon out. The microwave lit up like a firework display, and I screamed so loudly that my neighbor knocked on my door to check if I was alive. FML
Today, I left my daughter with a babysitter for the first time. When I came home, my microwave was ruined because they had attempted to heat cans of Play-Doh as a science experiment. FML
Boom!
Today, while I was in the shower, my 4 year-old son wondered what would happen if he put 6 eggs in the microwave. FML
Today, I had to explain to my 27 year-old sister why a stainless steel fork isn't a good toy for my 8 month-old baby. Twice. FML
Demon child
Today, I was babysitting a two year-old. He was messing around with a silver fork and I told him it was dangerous. He then got mad at me, started crying, and stabbed me right in the foot. Be warned, even though they're little, they can still cause a lot of pain. FML
One night
Today, I woke up after putting my child to bed. Drowsy, I stumbled down to the kitchen to make a mug cookie. I read a recipe on my phone, and put a knob of butter in a cup to melt in the microwave. I put my phone in the microwave and turned it on for 30 seconds, and didn't realize what I'd done until I smelt burning plastic. FML

It's not about how smart the kid is, it's about how dumb you are for not telling him what he should not put in the microwave. YDI.

Expecting a kid to know to not put metal in a microwave without being told is like expecting anti-obesity groups to blame parents rather than McDonalds for child obesity.

it's not a "smart enough" issue, that is a learned item (i.e. you wouldn't instinctively know metal can't go in a microwave oven unless either someone told you, or you tried it) FML, today my mom wasn't smart enough to teach me about microwaves before being an SA and telling me to cook my own food

If your child is not "smart enough" not to put metal in the microwave, that is your fault. It is also an indication that the child is not old enough to cook his own food in the microwave.

or just that they weren't told not to...

I do it all the time and nothing happens.

It's not that your kid wasn't "smart enough." What seems like common sense to an adult might not be apparent to a child. That's why it's your job as a parent to teach them things like this.

it won't do anything. there needs to be points. like with a fork.

it's not a problem if your child is 'smart enough'; it's the fact if you are good enough of a parent to train them properly; which is a NO obviously since you just called ur kid stupid for your mistake!!

spoon should have been a problem cuz it doesn't have the prongs like a fork the pork sparks because the prongs act like antennae to the microwaves

...then tell him. you also have the option of elaborating to your child what is metal and what isn't, depending on his/her age and/or level of comprehension. or pay for new microwaves every week. your prerogative. |the kid|

I once put a candle in the microwave to try to melt the wax. There is a tiny little bit of metal at the botton to hold the wick in place. The second I started the microwave it was like lightning inside.
