Today, I found out what it's like to drive seven hours home with a woman who just brutally rejected your marriage proposal. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Next time, text me instead
Today, I drove 120 miles to spend a few days with my girlfriend. Less than 12 hours into my stay, she dumped me. FML
Today, I had to suffer through a four hour flight beside my ex. Yesterday, I proposed, on the last day of our vacation. She said no. FML
Today, I proposed to my girlfriend of 6 years. She said no. Why? She's already married. FML
Today, after being with my boyfriend for seven years, he finally proposed. To another woman. FML
Today, I drove three hours to surprise my girlfriend, who I hadn't seen in three weeks. When she opened the door, she gasped, told me to fuck off, and slammed the door in my face. FML
Today, I was cuddling with the girl I've been seeing for the past few months. She was saying how much she liked me and how much I meant to her. Reciprocating those feelings, I asked her to be my girlfriend. It was a HARD no for her. Then she drove me an hour and a half home. FML
Today, I broke up with my girlfriend. Driving her home, we got stuck in a construction zone. I waited half an hour with with my ex-girlfriend bawling her eyes out in the passenger seat as I watched the traffic lady eat her lunch. FML
Today, I went on a 70-mile drive to the next town over to finally meet this beautiful girl I had talked to online. To my surprise, she looked exactly how she did in her pictures, minus the ring on her finger and the fiancé who wanted to punch me in the face. FML
Today, after my girlfriend telling me for years that she would marry me in a heartbeat, I finally proposed. She said no. FML
Don't drink and drive
Today, after 7 hours of driving, I begged my wife to take over for the last 3 hours. She pulled out a flask and took a long swig, then smirked at me. I drove the rest of the way. FML

"So... What's for dinner?"

She isn't automatically wrong for rejecting it, oddly enough. And it's hard to trust the assessment of brutal from somebody who got turned down. Maybe he asked in a big public display and she had to either turn him down then, or say yes then tell him "actually, no" later on. Either would feel rough. Plus they may still be together, it's not always all or nothing.

Why would you even drive together?

Well as a couple in a good place (well presumably, he proposed after all), driving up together seems normal. And getting a hire for one would be pretty expensive.

Obviously they meant the return journey.

This post needs more context

Exactly. I think the only question that needs to be asked, is have you two ever talked about marriage before this? If not, YDI.

I would like to know what "brutally rejected" entails exactly...

You're too nice, I would have left her there for being a ****.

Why is she a ****? Because she doesn't want to marry him and most likely thought she was getting a pleasant getaway weekend before OP upended her life out of the blue (or so I would guess, since these FMLs never offer evidence that the poster talked to his girlfriend in advance)? If anyone's life sucks here, it's hers.

Believe it or not, rejecting a proposal doesn't make a woman feel good about herself. It is a life defining decision, and she has to choose what is best for her, accepting a proposal to spare a guys feelings is not the right thing for anyone involved. To be in a relationship he sees as being serious enough to propose she must care for him, it will really hurt her saying no, knowing it will devastate him. Maybe in rare cases where the girl is a total attention seeking bitch who was just using a guy this doesn't apply, but i doubt many guys would put up with a girl like that for long, never mind propose to one. So no, rejecting a proposal doesn't make her a bad person, it doesn't mean she doesn't care about him, it doesn't mean she enjoyed hurting him.

I hope you got home early enough for her to pack her shit and get out.

What if it's her place?

She didn't have to brutally reject it. She could've just said no.

She may have just said no. Having a proposal rejected can only be brutal.

that's.... brutal. I hope everything works out for you

she would have been on a plane, train, bus or cab but NOT in my car.

Well then, I sincerely hope that you also wouldn't have been the one who asked her to accompany you on what must have been a romantic weekend getaway, because otherwise it'd be very obvious why she rejected your petty ass.
