Today, I finally released my first music album. I dropped out of college to pay for it after my friends who liked my music urged me to. They keep telling me how much they love the CD. I've only sold one copy. Turns out they put it on a sharing site so only one of them would have to buy it. FML
Collection
Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I finally worked up the courage to play my friends the demo CD that I've spent all summer recording. I didn't tell them it was me. Not even 10 seconds into the first song, my best friend asked me to turn it off because it sucked. FML
Today, I heard on a local radio a song I wrote almost 2 years ago. Apparently, after my family and I moved away, my former band found a new guitar player, and that song is now the first single of their debut LP. FML
Today, I finally got the courage to tell the guy I liked how I felt by making him a mix CD. Confident, I gave it to him. After class, I went to the trash can to throw some paper away. I saw my mix CD in the trash. FML
Today, after spending weeks working on a song that meant a lot to me, I reluctantly posted it online. The "friend" who'd convinced me to post it, commented, "This is the worst shit I've ever heard." He got 30 likes, along with a barrage of agreeing, equally terrible comments. FML
Rock n Roll is a dirty business
Today, I was in a band with some friends and we got our first gig at a local festival, but I'd already agreed to work serving drinks at the festival. My bandmates got really annoyed and kicked me out of the band. They then went ahead and performed the song that I WROTE, without me, at the festival where I was working. FML
Today, I bought a CD off a man who always plays Spanish guitar in the subway. When I got to work and tried playing the CD, it was blank. I paid $15 for a blank CD. FML
It's all in the game
Today, after seven months of my supporting him, including paying all the bills, cleaning the house, and cooking, my unemployed "aspiring rapper" boyfriend finally got paid for his music. Did he buy me something nice? No, he called his boys to hit the club and pissed away everything he'd earned and then some. FML
Today, I bought my very first college textbook. I received a stack of hole-punched papers. My $195 "book" isn’t even bound together. FML
Focus group
Today, my mate came over wanting me to listen to a new music CD he got. It was by some unknown band, and at the end he asked me what I thought, and I said it was ok but the lead singer couldn't sing even if his life depended on it. Turns out my mate's the lead singer, and it was his own band. FML
Today, I made my mom a mix CD for her car. It took me ages to find just the right songs that would be perfect for her. When I played it for her in the car, she took it out and threw it out of the window. FML

Well that was a dumb move. Did you really think your friends would buy enough music to cover your income for the rest of your life?

Welcome to the music industry. And if it was acual money you were after then it's stupid for you to think you could make enough to get by when you're an unknown artists with one album.

YDI for being stupid enough to drop out of college for such a dead end dream

You should promote your music. Maybe by revisiting this post of yours and linking us to one of your songs would be a good start.

I was gonna say the same, I know dozens of people who are in bands but their education comes first and they practise and record music alongside college. Why couldn't you do that?
White667 0
Yeah, I mean Jesus, dropping out for music? That's not even something you NEED to do full time in order to succeed.

Why was #1 buried? It's valid in every way.

um...sell merchandise? Play live? There's a reason the biggest bands on the Earth do shit like that. Do you really expect to make a living off of selling records alone?

Agreed with 1, 44, and 70. And honestly? It's common sense to think about back ups. Go ahead and do your dream, but minor in something on the side so you might at least have a nice job if shit hits the fan.

why, you go to college to get further education for what you think you want to end up doing.. he already picked it and saved himself some money. If it really doesn't work out, he can pick college back up at any time. It's ALWAYS there.
DameGreyWulf 1
Gets more expensive, actually. Inflation as time passes, plus not being eligible for a few scholarships because you're not fresh out of high school, and of course any credits you previously earned disappear after a certain amount of time, so you'll waste plenty of time retaking classes....

I agree. I'm assuming you don't have millions of friends, let alone a thousand. You had no reason to drop out of college for such a low amount of people. YDI for what you did, but you should go after your friends for stealing it if you're that upset about it and think your life if ******. You know which person bought it and put it up on the site, and you know which other ones stole it, go get em or stop bitching.
LilaBear 2
actually, that should be the other way round - "I'm assuming you don't have a thousand friends, let alone a million". It's like saying "I'm assuming you don't have even a thousand friends, so you're sure not going to have a million." Saying it the reverse doesn't even make sense.
djqlue 0
Actually, it also makes sense to say "I'm assuming you don't have even a thousand friends, so you're sure not going to have a million," because it implies that if he doesn't have a few, how could he have enough to cover his expenses for the rest of his life.

ill buy it :)

I kind of want to buy it now too. I feel bad for the OP.

If it was really that good, people would buy it, share site or not. Get a manager, play your ass off, and if you are good enough you'll sign with someone and have a nice shiny buss.
kimilei 0
Agreed. I'm always downloading, but after so many downloads I have no problem buying an album if I like what I'm hearing, especially if the album has songs that aren't on torrent. YDI for not being prepared.

Whats the link? For the torrent I mean.

Risky dream. You tried to go all out, and pretty much lost everything in the process. My recommendation? Try local shows, like open-mic night at bars, and try to promote your album. That would have been a smart first step, but this is your only chance at success now since you went all out, so you might as well try that route. You can't just trust that your "friends" are going to promote your cd. You spent everything on those cds, so now you should go out and try to make it worth while.
