Today, I fell in a vent in our floor while decorating our Christmas tree. My husband removed the grates months ago to increase airflow. I fell in past my knee and he had to pull me out by the arms. It's been four days and I can still barely walk. My office is on a second floor... We don't have an elevator. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, my family and I were decorating the Christmas tree. It seemed a bit unstable, but we decorated it without any problems. Later, while my daughter sat by the tree, it began to fall. Her grandmother stopped the tree from hitting her. I, on the other hand, screamed like a little girl. I'm a 38 year-old guy. FML
Merry Christmas!
Today, I bought a Christmas tree and carried it up three flights of stairs alone. I finally got it inside, only to realize it was too tall. I tried trimming it, but now it’s crooked, shedding everywhere, and leaning like it gave up on life. I hope the greenish marks on the ceiling won't be permanent. FML
Today, after months of telling my landlord about the weak floorboards in my living room, I fell through them as I was trying to repair them myself. FML
Today, my husband finally got round to cutting down a tree limb in our front yard after months of me begging him. It fell on me. FML
Hang tight
Today, as I was pulling wire for an addition to my boss's house, I was on a ladder drilling a hole when my coworker kicked the ladder out from under me and left me hanging from a rafter twenty feet in the air. To make matters worse, I had to pee. I'm now in my car with dead arms and wet pants. FML
Today, in an effort to repair our fake Christmas tree, my girlfriend succeeded in gluing it to the floor. I can't get it loose. FML
Today, I was standing on a desk at work to run wiring in a suspended ceiling, since we have no ladder. My phone rang, I rushed to answer it, tripping and smashing my leg. It was my boss, calling to tell me he was bringing over a ladder. FML
The staircase
Today, the elevator at work was taking forever so I decided to make a change and take the stairs instead. I slipped on the second step and spent the next few minutes laying there as people asked if I was OK. My pride is bruised… as well as my ass. FML
Today, my family and I were burning our Christmas tree. For a laugh, my dad jokingly pushed me toward the fire. I tripped, and my doctor says the burns are probably going to scar. FML
Christmas is treacherous
Today, I decided to take my girlfriend out to look at Christmas lights and get hot chocolate. While cleaning my snow-covered truck, I slipped and broke three bones in my ankle, and now need surgery. FML

Your husband is an idiot. There are lots of different grates you can get that increases airflow without leaving an open hole in your floor.

I'm sure you can get some time off for that kind of injury. All you have to do is ask.

hope it's an artificial tree. that extra air flow will dry out a real tree real fast, and create a fire hazard.

So you've had a hole in the floor for months and didn't do anything about it?

The way they phrased it as something the husband did makes me suspect OP didn't know. Perhaps the vent was behind furniture where it was hard to see. In a small or oddly laid out room one might squeeze into, say, the gap between a couch & a wall, to gain access to a part of the tree, or put a recliner or something else that had been near the hole, into storage to free up space for a gathering. Or she did know but couldn't do anything about it because he's a bully & INSISTED the grate be left out. Months later OP has forgotten about the hole, or just gets distracted for a moment, steps in the hole. I am a big fan of due dilligence, and yeah, people shouldn't have holes in their floors. But we don't have enough info to conclude that OP was negligent.

That isn't the way it works. Registers are there for a reason. That is one of them.

Sounds like your husband is being lazy. When’s the last time you had your HVAC cleaned? It’ll work like new and you can keep the grates on - that are there so you don’t fall down a hole in your floor!

Your Husband removed the grates to increase airflow? What a dumb ass. The airflow is going to limited any way by the number of vents you have, and the intake.
