Today, because it was our first Christmas as a couple, I was careful to get my girlfriend what I considered to be a very thoughtful gift. She opened it, took one look at it, made a face like I'd just kicked a puppy, and told me that in future it would be better if I just gave her money so she could buy her own presents. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I bought my girlfriend a very expensive necklace. I gave it to her thinking she'd be extremely happy. Instead she was mad at me because my gift for our anniversary was better than hers. FML
Today, after buying my girlfriend a $700 bracelet for Christmas, I hinted that I wanted a pair of Oakleys. She told me I shouldn't get her anything and that I should expect even less. FML
Today, I had a very long, complicated talk with my girlfriend. Apparently, since she isn't religious, she doesn't have to give anyone Christmas presents, and yet expects everyone to give her some. She then told me what I should get her. FML
Today, I thought my mom and I could put aside our differences and open our Christmas presents. When she opened mine, she turned to my dad and said she didn't want the present, so I could give it to someone else. 'Tis the season. FML
No no no!
Today, the girl I have feelings for gave me a really thoughtful handmade gift. She apologized for not buying something. I meant to tell her it’s worth more than anything, or priceless, but my mouth instead said, “It’s worthless." FML
Today, I've been considering breaking up with my girlfriend so I don't have to buy her a Christmas present. FML
Grateful
Today, it was sister’s birthday. I decided to give her money instead of a present, because I couldn’t come up with a gift idea. When she opened the envelope and took the $100 out, she looked at me and asked me if this was the best I could’ve done. FML
Sleigh bells
Today, my mom and I went to Best Buy for some Christmas shopping. She picked up some presents for me and told me not to look at what she was buying. When we got to the register, she didn't have enough money, and I ended up having to buy my own presents. FML
Keeping up appearances
Today, just like every other celebratory day (like my anniversary or birthday) I ordered my own Christmas present. My husband doesn't get it. I tried to explain. He openly admits he has no idea what I like and has no interest in learning, but wants me to have something to open so he won't look bad. FML
Today, my girlfriend came home and announced that she'd just bought a $40 pair of flipflops. She then declared that I wouldn't be getting a birthday gift this year due to budget shortfalls. For hers a month prior, I'd got her a $300 piece of jewelry. FML

Perhaps it was a photo of OP kicking a puppy?

Since OP mentioned "thoughtful" and the gf said to just give her money next time, I wouldn't be surprised if the thoughtful gift wasn't expensive enough

Hey, honesty in a girlfriend can be hard to come by. At least now you know she won't bullshit you and you're off the hook trying to work out what to buy for her!

I'm all in for honesty. But one does not have to be overly condescending about it.

Hah, at first I read this as "Honestly, a girlfriend can be hard to come by"

A Shakeweight is a fine gift. You deserve better!

Maybe it's not meant to be.

Doesn't matter what you bought her. Your girlfriend sounds like a spoiled brat.

Ok, but if someone just got an abortion, but also a new dress and their partner got them a coat hanger, that'd be pretty ****** up. This is just an example, but what may seem like a thoughtful gift to some will be horrible to others.

You always can make up bad examples, but this FML doesn't sound like a terrible case involving an abortion because then the girlfriend's reaction would have been much more severe. To me, it sounds like a woman slowly emasculating her spouse, and I have seen such things happening all too often. OP's girlfriend sounds like a bully trying to destroy the self-esteem of her boyfriend. Be careful, OP.

On one hand that's sounds like she was very rude and it sucks to have someone hate a gift and be a brat when you put a lot of work into it. On the other I just finished reading a long list where people said the worst gifts they've ever been given, and one woman mentioned that her husband of many years got what he thought was a very thoughtful of a beautiful, expensive gold cross, apparently forgetting his wife was Buddhist and allergic to gold. So unless you're in the second group of thinking $$$=thought and your gift was actually totally off base, FYL.

What happen to 'it's the thought that counts?'

I guess not everyone enjoys a high quality slice of enriched Uranium for christmas, no matter how thoughtful or expensive it was
