Today, at 3:00 am, I sat with my 3 year-old daughter while she tried to go back to sleep. She'd had a nightmare, and I'd read that "not leaving" was the most important thing a father could do. My wife woke and called me a pervert for sitting there. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Spooked
Today, I was trying to sleep when I saw a head looming from the darkness with no eyes and a mouth open like a silent scream. I just froze and pissed myself. It was my daughter wanting to cuddle with us. Alas, the bed was wet, so she got put back in her bed, while we had to share the sofa downstairs. FML
Helpless
Today, my husband actually helped put our 4 year-old to bed because I was watching my nephews, who were about to be picked up. When I was sitting with my nephews in the living room, he yelled for me to help with our daughter. I said I couldn’t and he told me to shut up. I put her to bed every other night. FML
Boundaries
Today, my son climbed into our bed because he'd had a nightmare. He and my wife spent hours whispering and giggling like they were at a slumber party. Cute, until the next morning, when they were both tired, grumpy, and uncooperative. FML
Sleepless in Singapore
Today, I was having trouble sleeping due to jet lag. I was finally sleepy and looking forward to a decent night of rest when my 4 year-old woke up and refused to stay in his room or try to rest. The next two hours involved him shouting at me, kicking me, and crying because he wanted Daddy, who is on a business trip. FML
Burn out
Today, I'm dead on my feet after being awake since 1AM with the baby. I begged my wife to watch both the baby and our four year-old for an hour while I napped. She refused, and instead said she needed a rest more. Her reason? “I might need to do a shit later.” FML
How sweet
Today, my 3-year-old fell asleep in our bed while cuddling me, and I let him stay since he was being so sweet. In the middle of the night, he took off his pants and pissed all over my head and back. FML
Mystery man
Today, as I was taking my three year-old daughter home from daycare, she asked where her daddy was. I tried to tell her that I was her father, but she answered, "No, not you! My other daddy!" I've got some talking to do tonight. FML
Today, my 2-year-old daughter and my 27-year-old husband both woke me up in the early hours of the morning. Their complaints were the same: they'd both wet the bed. FML
Today, my daughter hugged me around the neck and whispered, "I'm going to cut your head off." I'm afraid to go to sleep now. FML
Today, it's 3:42 a.m. and my son is crying because I won't let him play with his dirty diaper. FML

Hopefully she was just joking? And, I mean, it was 3am, she was probably out of it anyway. No worries, you did the right thing and it's good that you're not letting her come into your own bed when those things happen because then they'll do it all the time. That's how it was with my brothers, atleast.

If she's serious, then she's clearly not cut out for parenthood - certainly not adoption. She's your DAUGHTER, and the fact you adopted shouldn't make a difference - your wife should understand, and shouldn't even be able to CONSIDER that. You should leave her, both because she doesn't appreciate and understand you AT ALL, and because she clearly doesn't feel the same way as you do about the adoption.

Yeah, seriously! I think you're a great dad for staying awake until 3am to take care of your daughter. Your wife needs therapy.

As an adopted child myself, I commend you for trying to be a good dad... and have the sudden urge to slap your wife upside the head for being an idiot.

Your wife is an idiot. I have two daughters, one with to sons of her own. I spent many nights sitting by the bed after nightmares. On rare occasions, they'd tell me about the nightmares. Usually, they just wanted Daddy there. Tell your wife to get counseling, and tell your new daughter that you love her and will always be there.

The best thing you can do *is* leave. Make her learn to deal with irrational fears herself -- and that they are indeed irrational.

Might want to take a psych course. By having an adult give attention and 'stand watch' watching out for the boogy man, you are teaching the child that adults thought something was wrong and needed watching out for. It's the same reason you are not supposed to react with panic when they stub their toe, or skin their knee -- they take their cues from the adults, and will think it is something to panic over.

He didn't say he was "standing watch" for anything...you are making a lot of assumptions about what happened here. She may have screamed and he went in to check on her.

You did the right thing coming from someone who had awful nightmares as a kid, my parents didn't stay with me in fact they would shut my door to keep from hearing me cry. So I grew up with abandonment issues. Trust me. You just need to explain to your wife what you were doing.
